Blu-Ray Review: The Point

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Harry Nilsson was a singer/songwriter who gained success during the late 1960s and the early 1970s. He wrote songs for artists such as the Monkees and Three Dog Night. Nilsson would record many albums, but The Point originally released in December 1970, would end up gaining more traction with animated TV Movie that aired on ABC in 1971.

Now for the 50th anniversary of this film MVD Rewind collection is giving The Point a Blu-ray release for the first time. Including many bonus features. Let's take a look at what is in this special edition of this film.

The film follows a boy named Oblio- who is born without a point on his head. Living in a land where everyone and everything has a point. Oblio lives as an outcast. Because not having a point is against the law. So Oblio is banished from the land and only has his dog Arrow with him. The two go on their journey to the Pointless Forest where they learn a valuable lesson.

The story is a bit odd but feels like something that Dr. Suess might have come up with. And for that it is kind of cool. The music, however, is the star in this film in my opinion. All of the songs were written and performed by Harry Nilsson himself and are the following;

  • Me And My Arrow
  • Everything's Got 'Em,
  • Poli High
  • Think About Your Troubles
  • Life Line
  • P.O.V. Waltz
  • Are You Sleeping

It is good to note as well that there were different narrators, Dustin Hoffman for the first telecast, Alan Barzan for the second and Alan Thicke for the third. Then for the home video release, The Beatles legend Ringo Starr. This is the one we get, and I am so glad for that! His iconic voice really stands out in this release.

Now it is good to note that because of some of the missing negative elements. This version of The Point was scanned from a 16mm release.
The film has been restored in 2K High Definition and is presented in the original full frame format 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio is DTS-HD MA 2.0 and 5.1. There is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

While there is some imperfections in the picture quality, I think fans of fantasy, animation and Ringo Starr are going to be thrilled with this release. But just having the film is never enough for MVD Rewind Collection. They always go above and beyond to bring the consumer the best product possible. And they added some great special features to this Blu-ray set.
