Life After Flash

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Flash Gordon is a part of pop culture. From comics to radio, movie serials, TV shows and The Iconic 80's Flash Gordon movie. I can imagine anyone who hasn't heard of Flash Gordon.

I remember watching the 80's Flash Gordon movie for the first time. The pounding theme by Queen, "FLASH! AH-AAAAAH". The color palette was out of this world. And the campiness of the story, so much fun. I was a fan immediately! Sam J. Jones' enthusiastic take on the character was inspiring. I still love it to this day.

So when I read about a new documentary from Cleopatra Entertainment and distributed by MVD Visual called "Life After Flash" which follows the life and times of Sam J. Jones, I knew I had top check it out.

Probably some have heard the horror stories about Sam Jones. The trouble he was on set. Was this the reason Sam seemed to disappear from the Hollywood scene? The documentary explores Sam's early life the heartbreak of fighting parents and tragic loss of his older brother.

During the film Sam talks honestly and openly about his struggles with drugs and infidelity causing his first two marriage to fail. He discusses how finding his new wife changed his life completely as he found a relationship with God and how it gave him a new beginning and a new lease on life and a new career and a resurgence of popularity due to comic con and the movie Ted.

The documentary also explores the Flash Gordon movie. The production, the music, the props. We hear from some of the actors that worked with Sam on Flash Gordon. Fans, friends, Sam's children and wife, Flash Gordon movie prop collectors and so much more.

Director, Lisa Downs has made a very nice little film. It is so good to see Sam J.  Jones in a great place happy and enjoying life. As for the film, i
t is good to note there is some brief adult language in parts of this film. So this is not for the kids.

The film is presented on Blu-ray in 1080p transfer in 1.90:1 and a Dolby Digital 2.0. The picture quality is great and the audio is sufficient, but it would be nice to hear it in 5.1. But that's not all there is plenty of bonus features as well.

  • Brian Blessed on Hawkman Filming

  • Extended Comic Con Sequence

  • Deep Roy "Ambition" Rap

  • Melody Anderson on Improvisation

  • Sam J Jones on His Move Into Acting

  • "Tell Me More About This Man Houdini"

  • Sam J Jones "Prayer Walk" In Full

  • Excerpt from Chattanooga Film Festival's SCRIPTS GONE WILD Script Read with Sam J Jones as Flash Gordon

  • Official Trailer

  • Slideshow

This is really fun documentary that runs over an hour and a half, but actually feels half that. If it wasn't for the several uses of the "F" word this would have gotten my highest grade.

So for fans of Sam J. Jones or Flash Gordon this is a great little film to add to your collection. Life After Flash is available on Blu-ray and DVD. Head over to MVDShop.com and get a copy today.
