Spaceballs (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

When you are looking for a good laugh Mel Brooks films are a great way to go. Whether it was The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood: Men in Tights or Young Frankenstein. One thing is for sure Mel Brooks gave us laughs galore.

Now one of my favorite Mel Brooks film was always Spaceballs. When I heard Kino Lorber was going to release this film on Blu-ray and Ultra HD the little kid in me rejoiced. I remember watching reruns of this film when I was a kid. I watched it every time it was on, I never got tired of it! It would be hard to even count how many times I have seen this film in my lifetime.

Spaceballs follows a hired gunman Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his co-pilot Barf – a half man, half dog (played by John Candy) are on the run in their winged Winnebago from Pizza the Hut who they owe a huge mount of money. They have a short amount of time or "Pizza will send out for you.". Suddenly the answer to the prayers King Roland offers them a huge reward if they return his runaway bride  daughter Princess Zespa (Daphne Zuniga).

Spaceballs, Bluray, still, image,Kino Lorber, KL Studio classics,

Sounds simple but you have to give account for the President Skroob (Me Brooks) the sinister Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner) and the inhabitants of the evil plant Spaceball who want nothing more to destroy the Princess's home world of Druidia and steal their precious pure air.

Lone Star's only hope to save Druidia, return the Princess home safe and get the reward is with the help of the legendary and mystical Yogurt (Mel Brooks), who must teach Lone Star how to use the power of the universe known as“the Schwartz.”

Now when reading this story line for those that have never seen it. People would think this is just a spoof of Star Wars and while it it, there is so much more! Mel Brooks spoofed every favorite sci-fi film you can think of! From Wizard of Oz to Alien to Planet of the Apes. No sci-fi movie was safe.

Mel Brooks wrote an adult themed script. It is good to note there is many sexual innuendos and one use of the F-Bomb. But the cast is spectacular. Everyone is amazing but Mel Brooks in the duel role of President Skroob and Yogurt is great, Rick Moranis is hilarious and John Candy is a film treasure.

Dark Helmet, Spaceballs, Bluray, Kino Lorber, KL Studio Classics,

The critics were not kind to Spaceballs and it was not a Box office smash. So sadly we never got Spaceballs II: The Search for more Money. But over the years Spaceballs has become a cult classic and I am glad Kino Lorber is the one giving this cult classic a deluxe HD release.

Now this Blu-ray release from KL Studio Classics has transferred the film in 1080p in this original widescreen format in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. When I examined the picture quality from the DVD and the Blu-ray there is no comparison. This Blu-ray transfer is lightyears above other releases. I was happy with my DVD for all these years, until seeing this. I never realized how much I needed Spaceballs in HD till now!

Now the really cool thing that KL Studio Classics did with this release is they ported over the bonus features from the DVD release and out them on this Blu-ray. Take a look at he list of bonus features.

* Audio Commentary featuring Mel Brooks
* Force Yourself! Spaceballs and the Skroobing of Sci-fi (HD 16:44)
* Spaceballs: The Documentary (SD 30:04)
* In Conversation with Mel Brooks and Co-Writer Thomas Meehan (SD 20:30)
* John Candy: Comic Spirit (SD 10:02)
* Watch Spaceballs in Ludicrous Speed (HD 00:30)
* Film Flubs (SD 1:24)
* Storyboards to Film Comparison (SD 6:41)
* Behind the Scenes Image Gallery
* Posters and Art Image Gallery
* Exhibtor Trailer with Mel Brooks Intro (SD 2:12)
* Spaceballs Teaser (HD 1:19)
* Spaceballs Trailer (HD 2:36)
* Bonus traliers for other KL Studio Classics releases, The Producers, Life Stinks, Delirious and Once Upon A Crime

So now there is no reason to have the DVD and Blu-ray. My suggestion is retire that Spaceballs DVD and give it to some who has never experienced the fun. Who knows who may just create another Spaceballs fanatic just like us.

Spaceballs is available in HD Blu-ray and Ultra HD as well! So if you are a fan of Spaceballs as much as I am and you would like to get a copy of this cult classic in HD. Head over to Amazon.com and order your copy today! You are going to love it! And remember "May the Schwartz be with you!"
