Pretty Maids All In A Row (Blu-ray Review)

Gene Roddenberry is best known as the creator of the Star Trek Universe. But he was a prolific screenwriter penning many great scripts during his career. Most people think of his sci-fi work, but in 1971 a murder mystery/comedy he wrote and produced came to the screens.

That films was entitled "Pretty Maids all in a row". This year (2026) the film is celebrating it's 55th anniversary. So, for that epic of an anniversary Warner Archive Collection have restored and released this film on Blu-ray for the first time ever.

Synopsis: Set in a California high school stars Rock Hudson as a married football coach and faculty advisor who beds his female students and eventually resorts to murder to keep them quiet. Meanwhile, student Ponce de Leon Harper (John David Carson), who is suffering academically due to sexual frustration, lusts after his sexy new substitute teacher (Angie Dickinson), who soon takes care of his problem.

The film not only stars Rock Hudson, but, Angie Dickinson, Roddy McDowall, Telly Savalas, and Keenan Wynn. Talk about a all-star cast. The film was set during the sexual revolution and yet it is a sexploitation film at mixes in black comedy, and murder mystery elements.

Pretty Maids all in a row has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD MA 5.1. There are options for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The Blu-ray transfer is sourced from a new 4k scan from the original camera negative and what results is a beautiful looking print. There is no signs of damage that I could see while screening this film and the audio sounds crisp and clean. Now for most physical media fans the best part of owning the release is the bonus features. Well, sadly there is just the theatrical trailer.

Very rarely does Warner Archive fumble on a release. And I am not saying that this is necessary a fumble, but no interviews, featurettes, retrospectives nothing. That is disappointing. So much more could have been done for this release. But the scan is stellar.

If you love a good murder mystery and enjoy the writings of Gene Roddenberry, well, Pretty Maids All In A Row is a Blu-ray you might want to consider adding to your home video library. You can order a copy by heading over to MovieZyng or Amazon today.

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) the Blu-ray of Pretty Maids All In A Row receives....
