Saga of Phoenix Blu-ray Review | 88 Films Martial Arts Classic on Blu-ray

88 Films continually succeeds producing deluxe home video releases of lesser known films. Recently we saw The Cat and SS Experiment Love Camp

Now it is time for another deluxe Blu-ray release. This time it is the 1989 action, adventure fantasy film from directors Ngai Choi Lam and Sze-Yu Lau. Of course I am speaking of Saga of the Phoenix.

Synopsis: The Holy Maiden of Hell, Ashura possesses immense power that can destroy humanity. Buddhist monks trap her in a deep cave to keep her from falling into evil hands. Kindhearted Abbot Jiku grants her wish to enjoy the human world for 7 days.

Saga of the Phoenix is pure 80s fantasy adventure. I have always enjoyed the fantasy films of the 80s. And to be honest with you, I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy this film. But boy was I was pleasantly surprised.

88 Films have transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a remastered version of the original Cantonese Monoaural soundtrack. There is also the option for a newly translated English subtitles.

This is not just any transfer it is taken from a brand new 2k restoration from the original camera negative. Now as this was my first time watching this film, I have nothing to compare it  against. But I can tell you this was one great looking picture. 88 Films does it again. But as always they didn't stop there. They added some nice bonus features to this release. Take a look at what is included.

Bonus Materials
* Limited Edition Rigid Slip Case with New Artwork by Sean Longmore
* Limited Edition 40 Page Perfect Bound Book
* Limited Edition Premium Artcard
* Audio Commentary by Frank Djeng (NY Asian Fil Festival) and F.J. Desanto
* Alternate Japanese Footage
* Image Gallery
* Original Trailer

The film is entertaining. The audio commentary is informative. And the bonus of the artwork and book take this release from good to great. There is only one thing that I can say that would have made this release better for me. Of there was an English track.
