Sherlock Holmes Double Feature: Film Masters Blu-ray Review

Every crime fighter has their arch enemy. Superman has his Lex Luthor, Batman has his Joker, Captain America has Red Skull. When Arthur Conan Doyle began writing the adventures of the great detective Sherlock Holmes, he needed a nemesis enter Professor Moriarty. So popular were the adventures of Sherlock Holmes that as soon as cinema started the great detective would make an appearance.

In the 1930s Arthur Wontner was cast as Sherlock Holmes and what a casting it was. He looks just like what you would envision Sherlock Holmes to look like. During the decade he would star in 5 Sherlock film. But sadly "The Missing Rembrandt" has been lost. Film Masters have been releasing some amazing Blu-rays and a Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray is the next to be released.

This new Sherlock Holmes Double Features brings us not just any two Sherlock films, but the final two Arthur Wontner Sherlock films and two films that feature Holmes nemesis Moriarty. WOW you can get much better than that.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes (1935) The great detective Sherlock Holmes is now retired and living in Sussex. But there is no rest for the weary as he is drawn into one more case when his arch enemy Moriarty arranges with an American gang to kill John Douglas, a country gentleman with a mysterious past. ***

Silver Blaze (1937) Sherlock Holmes goes on vacation to visit his old friend Sir Henry Baskerville. But his wonderful time off comes to an abrupt end with a double-murder mystery. Now he's got to find Professor Moriarty and the horse Silver Blaze before the great cup final horse race. ***

Arthur Wontner and Ian Fleming have a great chemistry as Holmes and Watson. Then there is Lyn Harding, he is devilishly good as the evil professor Moriarty. These films are nice adaptions of the classic tales written by the great Arthur Conan Doyle.

Both films are housed on one Blu-ray disc. And before you think that is too much. These films run 75 and 71 minutes that is under 2 and a half hours that is more than enough space. These two films have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and are presented in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

These two classic Sherlock Adventures has been restored and look nice. When you look at these films streaming online or on previous DVD releases. This is a really nice upgrade. The picture is crisp and pretty clean. There are some age-related anomalies, but they are minor. When you think of the age of these films and how great they look on this Blu-ray it is pretty impressive.

Now as for bonus features, well, there are none I am sad to say. Also, these are Made-On-Demand Blu-ray discs. I wished they were pressed Blu-rays for the simple reason that pressed discs have a much longer lifespan than the burned discs.

All in all, this is a very nice Blu-ray release. The quality of these Blu-ray transfers bring new life to these classic Sherlock films. This release would make nice addition to anyone's Sherlock Holmes Library. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) the Blu-ray release of the Sherlock Holmes Double Feature receives.....
