Video rental stores have gone the way of the dinosaurs, but the nostalgia of those stores live on. In 2023 a Canadian horror comedy was produced entitled "The Last Video Store". Now the good folks at Arrow Video have released this film filled with nostalgia to Blu-ray.
Synopsis: When her estranged father passes, twenty-something Nyla is tasked with the thing she hates the most - cleaning up his mess. Left behind are a collection of VHS tapes, and with them, the burden of returning them to 'Blaster Video' a time capsule to an era in which cover art and a catchy movie title were king, run by Kevin, a human encyclopedia of VHS history and a friend of her father. Amongst the returns is an unknown tape, a movie not even Kevin has heard of. Was this the last movie Nyla's father watched before he died? The mystery is too much to resist. But when Kevin and Nyla press play, they unwittingly activate a long-dormant curse and a series of classic cinematic villains are plucked from B-movie heaven and hell to be unleashed into the store itself!
The Last Video Store is a throwback to the bad CGI films and the campy monster movies from yesteryear. Cody Kennedy & Tim Rutherford's debut feature is a love letter to a foregone era of film that we will never see again. But we can escape in this time machine and enjoy a nostalgic look into the past.
Arrow Video has transferred The Last Video Store to Blu-ray in High Definition 1080p and presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is the original DTS HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The Last Video Store really benefits from the HD Blu-ray transfer here. The 80s color scheme really pops and looks awesome like a bowl of skittles. The audio is clean. But an amazing looking transfer is not all this Blu-ray has going for it. Arrow Video added tons of cool bonuses to this release. Take a look!
