Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs was a film that stuck with me ever since the first time I saw it. It was probably because of the performance of Sean Whalen as Roach. But Sean Whalen made appearances in many entertaining films. Batman Returns, The Cable Guy, Jury Duty and Twister. He even made guest shots on great TV Shows like, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Friends, Just Shoot Me!, Scrubs, My Wife and Kids, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Lost.
One thing is for sure Sean Whalen is a very talented actor with a very unique look. Well, in 2024 he not only starred in a movie but directed it as well. The film would be his directorial debut and the film was a horror film entitled Crust. Now MVD Visual have released this film on Blu-ray.
Synopsis: Vegas Winters (Sean Whalen) is a former child star who lost it all and now is a laundromat owner. His lonely life is all about just surviving to the next day. Vegas keeps the leftover socks from customers and uses them to clean himself. When he gets abused and weeps into the pile of socks, it turns into a creature who seeks revenge on Vegas' enemies.
When I read the synopsis of this film, my first thought was this is going to be a very bad film. But Crust actually isn't a sock monster movie. While it has its horror elements, this film is actually a social commentary on depression. Many people suffer from depression and it's a real force for people to deal with. Crust attacks this head on.
Sean Whalen has created a bizarre film with crazy characters that in an extremely weird way works. It is also shot in black and white, which again oddly works for this film. Along with Whalen you will see some very familiar faces in this film, as Whalen surrounds himself with actors Dan Roebuck (The Fugitive), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Ricky Dean Logan (Back to the Future II & III) and Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller's Day Off).
Crust has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented widescreen format. The audio track is a Dolby Digital 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The film is crisp and clean, and this Blu-ray release really does this film justice as the black and white picture really pops in HD. There are no digital artifacts, and the audio is clean with no audio anomalies. But this Blu-ray offers much more than just the film. take a look at the bonus features included on this disc.
* Commentary with Writer / Director / Star Sean Whalen
* DOROTHY: 50 YEARS LATER: Sean plays Dorthy Gale a frustrated alcoholic after she returned from the Land of OZ.
* DOROTHY: THE BUMP AND RUN: Dorthy Gale is looking for love in all the wrong places.
* Q&A from CRUST Los Angeles Premiere
These Dorthy shorts are just as strange as the main feature. But defiantly worth checking out. Also, the inclusion of the commentary by Sean Whalen takes us behind the camera, always a good thing. Finally, the Q&A from the Crust Premiere is a tremendous bonus. If you couldn't be there you can experience it on video.
Crust is one of those films that you will never forget after seeing it. Not to spoil anything, but in the final scene of the film, there is a hint at a possible sequel. At least the door is open for one. We will see if that ever happens.
So, if you enjoy strange horror films, Crust is going to be one film that needs to be on your list to see. I suggest this Blu-ray as there is the bonus features you won't get on a streaming service. Hea over to MVDShop or Amazon and order your copy today.
Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) the Blu-0ray release of Crust receives....
