Roger Moore is probably best known for his time as 007 James Bond. Whether he was the best Bond or not is up for debate. Some say Sean Connery, but that is for another time. Roger Moore before becoming 007 spend his time on TV. He starred on the adventure series The Saint and the short-lived comedy/drama The Alaskans.
The Alaskans ran from 1959-1960, a total of 36 episodes. Now for the 65th year anniversary of this TV series debut Warner Archive Collection has restored this series and released it on Blu-ray for the first time ever.
Synopsis: Silky Harris (Roger Moore), an adventures teams up with his friend Reno McKee (Jeff York). Along for the ride is showgirl Rocky Shaw (Dorthy Provine). The trio stake their luck, love and live on the ice-coated gambles for riches and survival in the Yukon in the 1890s during the gold rush.
This was my first time watching this series and boy what a fun show it was. Roger Moore is amazing as Silky. Jeff York brings a great deal of the comedy with his portrayal of Reno and Dorthy Provine is much more than just a beautiful woman, her acting is stellar.
These episodes are in glorious black and white and run for around 45 to 50 minutes. They are fast paced standalone adventures with a hint of comedy just to make it fun. They are so enjoyable as you finish one episode you be ready to check out another one immediately.
This series has been restored and transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in its original 1.33:1 full screen aspect ratio. The audio is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono track. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Now as I have never seen this show before I can't compare it to what I have seen. But I will tell you the clarity of these episodes are stellar. When you think this show is 65 years old and it looks as crisp and clean as if it was produced yesterday. That is miraculous.
Warner Archive have released this series on Blu-ray. This is a 9-disc Blu-ray set. Meaning each disc contains 4 episodes. This is more than enough room for these episodes without suffering and digital artifacts.
I love when I uncover a classic series that I have never experienced before. The Alaskans was a tremendous series, that got cut short. I would have loved to see more adventures from Silky, Reno and Rocky. Bout at least thanks to Warner Archive we can rewatch this series in HD for years and years to come.
If you love classic TV as much as I do this somewhat forgotten TV series is defiantly a must see. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today. You won't be disappointed with this one.
Out of 4 TV Setes (4 being the best) The Alaskans the Complete Series Blu-ray receives......
