Icons Unearthed: The Simpsons (Blu-ray Review)

There have been a lot of shows that have ran for a good amount of seasons. Soap Opera have continued story arcs so they are able to last for decades. I am talking over 50 seasons. The kids classic Sesame Street ran for over 50 seasons. Saturday Night Live (SNL) has run for 5 decades. And the iconic western Gunsmoke ran for an amazing 20 seasons.

But the longest running sitcom of all time is one you may not even consider a sitcom, but it is. The Simpsons as of this writing is have been on TV for an amazing 34 seasons. That is an amazing feat for an iconic show.

In 2022 Vice debuted a documentary series entitled Icons Unearthed. In this series these episodes would delving deep into some of the best TV shows and Films of all time. Mill Creek Entertainment released a Blu-ray of the series Icons Unearthed: Star Wars. Now it is time for another release and it is the longest running sitcom of all time The Simpsons.

Synopsis: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson are household names around the world thanks to the longest-running scripted primetime television series of all time - The Simpsons. Icons Unearthed: The Simpsons highlights who and what has kept this beloved series rolling for so long, unpacking backstage stories and the continual comedy gold that has made this series the ultimate animation juggernaut.

Upon it's debut The Simpsons was both loved and reviled. It seemed as though the world fell on of the those sides. There didn't seem to be a middle of the road. But one thing is for sure there is no denying The Simpsons brought the world so much entertainment and hilarious characters.

This series consists of six 45 minute episodes. They track the show from it's humble beginnings to the animation classic that it has become. The episodes featuring interviews from the people who know this series the best. I'm talking about showrunners, writers and Fox Executives.

Now Mill Creek Entertainment have released this series on Blu-ray. This is a 4 disc Blu-ray set, that means there are two episodes per disc. These episodes have been transferred in 1080p and are presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

These episodes look amazing on Blu-ray. The picture is as sharp as a tack. The colors of the Simpsons world really pop on these episodes. The audio is clean with no distortion. But that us not all that is included here There is also a 4 disc included in this set that bonus interviews. In fact there is over 11 hours of full, unseen interviews with Bill Oakley (Showrunner), Jon Vitti (Writer), and Rob Kenneally (Former Fox Executive), Ken Estin (Executive Producer, The Tracey Ullman Show), Garth Ancier (Former Fox Executive).

Now I love documentaries. Growing up I used to watched the biography channel religiously. Watching about actors and actresses, presidents, gangsters and more. So for me this Blu-ray is right in my wheelhouse. But it may not be for everyone, but if you love The Simpsons and want to know more about what made The Simpsons pop culture icons, this is a must watch!

Now you could stream this series if you would like, but for me there is absolutely nothing like holding a Blu-ray disc in your hands loading into the player and selecting the episode you want. There is something so satisfying about physical media!
