Cat Ballou (1965) Blu-ray Review

When most people think Western Comedies they probably think films like Frisco Kid, Blazing Saddles, or my favorites Support your local Sherriff and The Villain. But there is one that film that is probably the arguably the best western comedy of all time and that is 1965's Cat Ballou.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment are now releasing this classic on Blu-ray and as a fan of this classic western comedy I couldn't be happier to be able to upgrade my DVD to Blu-ray!

Synopsis: When hired gun Tim Strawn (Lee Marvin) kills her rancher father, Cat Ballou (Jane Fonda) becomes an outlaw set on vengeance. Enlisting the help of washed-up gunslinger Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin) as well as the handsome bandit Clay Boone (Michael Callan), Cat strikes back at the land-development company that employed Strawn, and eventually targets the assassin himself.

Cat Ballou features a well written script and great acting topped off by the duel role performance of Lee Marvin. He is so great in this film it is no wonder he won an Oscar for Best Actor. And what really takes this film from good to great is the song narrations by the great Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye. It is understandable why so many considered this film an instant classic.

Sony Pictures has transferred this classic to Blu-ray in 1080p the film is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio options DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and DTS-Master Audio 2.0. There is also subtitles in English French and Spanish.

When I saw the picture quality on this Blu-ray I was amazed. The picture looks crisp and clean and the colors are bright and vibrant. There is no signs of damage to this picture that I could see. And finally this transfer is void of any digital artifacts. The audio is clear with no hiss or pops. But a tremendous looking transfer is not all this Blu-ray has going for it! Sony added some cool bonus features. Take a look!

* Audio Commentary with Cat Ballou stars Michael Callan and Dwayne Hickman
* Audio Commentary with Eddy Friedfeld, Lee Pfeiffer, and Paul Scrabo
* The Legend of Cat Ballou Featurette
* Theatrical Trailer

To get not one but two audio commentaries and one featuring Michael Callan and Dwayne Hickman. I find it very awesome to hear them talk about how much love they have for this film and the people involved in it. That is great. But the addition of the almost 13 minute featurette that takes the viewer on the journey of casting the roles, the cinematography and behind the scenes of this amazing film. These bonus features takes this from a great upgrade to a must own!

Cat Ballou holds such a special place in my heart. My dad was a huge western fan and I remember watching this film with him several times. Every time I watch it it reminds me of him! Sony released this previously on DVD, but to see this film on Blu-ray priceless. I only wish my dad was here to see it in HD!

If you love wacky western adventures they don't get much better than Cat Ballou. And if you want the best looking copy of this film, head over to Moviezyng.com and order your copy of Cat Ballou on Blu-ray! It is worth the upgrade!
