Deep Impact (1998) DVD Review

Disaster movies have always been a part of cinema. I don't know why, but audiences seem to love to see the possibility of the end of the world. Maybe it's the idea of the end of the world, but how the human spirit conquers all!

We have seen such films as Armageddon, 2012, The day after tomorrow and many more. In 1998 an all-star cast came together to take audiences on an end of the world adventure entitled Deep Impact. now 26 years after it's theatrical release Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment are releasing this film on DVD.

What would you do if you knew that in a handful of days an enormous comet would collide with Earth and all humanity could be annihilated? The countdown to doomsday is underway in this "gut-wrenching, eye-opening blast of a movie experience" (Jeff Craig, Sixty Second Preview) with an all-star cast featuring Robert Duvall, Tea Leoni, Elijah Wood, Vanessa Redgrave, Maximilian Schell and Morgan Freeman. With the film's dynamic fusion of large-scale excitement and touching, human-scale storylines, Deep Impact makes its impact felt in a big and unforgettable way.

Deep Impact is a thrilling ride to survive the ultimate demise of mankind. Morgan Freeman is amazing as the President of the United States. This man has had quite the career playing everything from a prisoner to president and from a detective to the supreme being himself, God! But as great as Morgan Freeman is the whole cast is just as great.

The story is extremely well played our over its 2 hour run time. And it is a fast paced 2 hours as well! The special effects are top notch. It is good to note that if you have never seen this film there is quite a good chunk of adult language in this film, so viewer beware.

Paramount has transferred Deep Impact to DVD in widescreen format. There are audio options for English Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 and French audio Dolby Digital 2.0. There is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The film transfer looks really nice for a DVD release. There was no damage to the print and no digital artifacts that I could see.

Now in addition to a really nice film print Paramount added some very cool bonus features to this release as well! Take a look at what is included on this DVD.

* Audio Commentary by director Mini Leder and Visual Effects Supervisor Scott Farrar
* Preparing for the End
* Making an Impact
* Creating the Perfect Traffic Jam
* Parting Thoughts
* Photo Gallery
* Teaser Trailer
* Theatrical Trailer

I love that Paramount added awesome bonuses such as a very interesting audio commentary worth the listen and the bonus featurettes to this DVD. It takes this DVD from Cool to ultra cool! The only thing I can say against this release would be that this was produced on a Made-On-Demand disc and not a pressed disc. Pressed discs are more durable and have a longer life expectancy. But if you store your burned disc properly, they should last a very long time.

If you love disaster films than Deep Impact needs to be in your collection. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today. You will have a lot of fun with this adventure!
