The Book of Harth (MVD DVD Review)

Many fans collect autographs of famous people. Even I have several autographs of some of my favorite NFL Quarterbacks from my childhood hanging on my office wall even to this day.

David Greg Harth wanted to get some autographs but wanted to do it in a completely different way that the norm. So, he went on an epic long journey to collect autographs in what would become known as The Bible Project. Now his journey is chronicled on DVD in The Book of Harth brought to us by MVD Visual!

For 20 years, conceptual artist David Greg Harth carried a Bible with him every single day, seeking signatures from the most culturally significant people in the world. In The Book of Harth, filmmaker Pierre Guillet follows the artist during the final year of his absurd quest, trailing him to scenes of frenetic celebrity worship. As Harth secures signatures behind stage doors, in city streets, and on the fringes of red carpets, Guillet cops spontaneous interviews with previous signees, from Noam Chomsky to Kevin Smith. As the last hours of his magnum opus draw to a close, Harth struggles to reconcile the project's meaning with its personal cost.

Now I have to be honest as a person brought up in a deeply religious household, I could not do what he did. I was brought up the bible was sacred, so to defile it would be wrong! And to be honest I was amazed to see that there was a several celebrities that felt the same way. But I can respect David's desire to do something that has never been done before.

The documentary is just over an hour in length, which is probably good. I think if it would have gone longer the film would have suffered. Along with seeing tons of celebrities signing and interacting with David, we hear from Professor Noam Chomsky, artist Wim Delvoye and directors Paul Schrader, Kevin Smith and John Waters.

The Book of Harth has been transferred to DVD the film is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio, the soundtrack is a 5.1 surround sound. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The film looks crisp and clean with no signs of digital artifacts.

Now in addition to the hour-long documentary there is a good amount of bonus features included on this release. Take a look at what is included.

* Audio Commentary featuring Director Pierre Guillet and Subject David Greg Harth
* Deleted Scene - Bruce Springsteen
* Deleted Scene - John Williams
* Deleted Scene - OJ Simpson
* Deleted Scene - Andrew Cuomo
* Deleted Scene - Stevie Wonder
* Deleted Scene - Michael J Fox
* Deleted Scene - Julian Assange

In the deleted scenes David talks about his encounters with these celebrities. These are extremely interesting bonuses. I am glad MVD added these to this release!

After watching this film, it boggles my imagination that anyone would spend two decades of their lives chasing celebrities to get autographs. That is sacrifice to art! I have mad respect for that! And what is even more mind boggling is that as soon as he finished his 20-year journey David Greg Harth started on Volume 2!

The Book of Harth is a fascinating documentary! If you love interesting documentaries The Book of H
