Romantic Comedy (1983) MGM Blu-ray Review

Dudley Moore was an ultra-talented musician, composer, actor and comedian. During his career he would star in some amazing films including, Arthur, Santa Claus: The Movie, Like Father, Like Son, 10, Foul Play, and The Hound of the Baskervilles.

In 1983 Dudley Moore joined Mary Steenburgen for a romantic comedy feature film that was ideally entitled "Romantic Comedy". Now the good folks at MGM Home Video are releasing this film on Blu-ray!

Playwright Jason Carmichael (Dudley Moore) hasn't had a hit in a long time... until novice writer Pheobe Craddock (Mary Steenburgen) enters the scene. Pheobe not only helps him pen hit after hit... She also steals his heart. After years of intimate collaboration, the two would be as close as the keys on a typewriter, were it not for just two things standing in their way - his wide and her husband.

Romantic Comedy is far from Dudley Moore's best film, but it is not without its charm. There is a real chemistry between Moore and Steenburgen. The film moves along nicely and for a film that is a little over an hour and a half you wouldn't know as it keeps your interest all the way through!

Arthur Hiller known for directing such classics as Silver Streak, The Out-of-Towners and The in-Laws masterfully directs this film here. He brings a realism to this film. The play and screenplay was written by Bernard Slade Newbound. Many may not known this but he created the classic sitcoms The Flying Nun and The Partridge Family.

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This film transfer is extremely nice. The colors are bright and vibrant. The picture is crisp and clean. And there is just the right amount of film grain. The audio is as clear as a bell with no hiss or pops found.

Now as we have stated in previous reviews MGM Blu-rays are bare bones releases. I would love to see a film trailer, audio commentary or interviews. But with these release that just feature the movie. It lends itself to VHS rentals back in the day. Those just included the movie!

I think if you are looking for a romantic movie for a night at home, this one could work really well. Or if you're a fan of Dudley Moore your movie collection is not complete without Romantic Comedy. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy of the Blu-ray from MGM today!
