The Sandman (2022) Blu-ray Review

We have seen a huge amount of DC Comics characters getting their own series. Such popular shows as Arrow, The Flash and Gotham. Even more recently we have seen these DC shows getting darker versions with shows like Swamp Thing, Pennyworth and Titans

In 2022 Netflix brought The Sandman to life in a tv series. The series is based on the 1989–1996 comic book written by Neil Gaiman. 11 Season 1 episodes were released. It was renewed for a second season and began filming on June 23, 2023 at Shepperton Studios, before it was suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Now Warner Brothers are releasing the first season of The Sandman on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray.

When the Sandman, a.k.a. Dream (Tom Sturridge, Sweetbitter, Velvet Buzzsaw) — the powerful cosmic being who controls all our dreams — is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for over a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused.

It is so amazing to see The Sandman comic book series come to life onscreen. The classic stories are adapted so well in these episodes, but in a way, they feel less connected to one another in my opinion. The longer-range story arc seems less important in this series and that  is a shame. But the production of these episodes is very cinematic. They were given such a huge budget, $15 million dollars per episode. That is a lot of money and it shows.

It should be noted that The Sandman is like these newer series. These episodes are extremely dark. They feature violence, suicide, sex and nudity, and a good amount of profanity. This is not a series for the who family. So, viewer beware!

All 11 episode are stretched across 3 Ultra HD discs.

Disc One:  Sleep of the Just | Imperfect Hosts | Dream a Little Dream of Me | A Hope in Hell

Disc Two
: 24/7 | The Sound of Her Wings | The Doll's House | Playing House

Disc Three
: Collectors | Lost Hearts | Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope

The episodes are presented in 2160p Ultra High Definition. The audio is a Dolby Atmos-TrueHD. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. These episodes look and sound absolutely stunning! But Warner Brothers added some cool bonus features to this release. Take a look at what is included.

* The Sandman Behind the Scenes Sneak Peak

* The World of the Endless

With the inclusion of all 11 episodes including a two-part season finale and the very cool bonus features. This will make a nice addition to someone's DC Comics physical media collection. While the series has its flaws, it is still an entertaining and enjoyable series. Now wonder the show was the eighth most-watched English language show on Netflix of 2022.

So, if you are enjoying the more adult, gritty and dark series of the DC Characters. The Sandman Season 1 in 4K UltraHD, Blu-ray or DVD is going to need to be on your list. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today!
