For years people wondered how Alfred seemed so wise to the ins and out of crime fighting. Literally Alfred Pennyworth was Batman's right-hand man! In 2019 Warner Brothers Television began producing an origin series of about a young Alfred Pennyworth.
Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon -- The Imitation Game), a former British SAS soldier in his 20s, who forms a security company in 1960s London and goes to work with young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge -- Our Girl, Reign, Fleabag), who's not yet become Bruce Wayne's father.
Jack Bannon stars as the young Alfred Pennyworth and Ben Aldridge stars as young billionaire Thomas Wayne. These two have a good dynamic together. You can really feel that his time with Thomas Wayne is where Alfred became the man, we all know.
Pennyworth aired not on network TV but EPIX and HBO Max for its entire three season run. As a result of being on these networks, there was no handcuffs put on the producers. So as a result, Pennyworth is made full on R-rated. The show is complete with strong adult language, sexual content, nudity and graphic violence. So, this is not a show for the entire family.
The series is a lot of fun to watch. The episodes are exciting and entertaining! But I think that is the one thing I have against this so is that it is purely an adult series. It would be cool to be able to sit down with the young Batman fans and have them enjoy the origins of Alfred Pennyworth as well.
All three season 30 almost hour-long episodes (except for the over hour-long pilot) are spread across 7 Blu-ray discs. The episodes are presented in 1080p in 2.00:1 widescreen presentation. The audio soundtrack is a 5.1 DTS-HD MA. There is the option for English SDH subtitles.
The transfer of these episodes to Blu-ray are really nice. The picture is crisp and clean, and the audio is clear. As for bonus features there is not a lot to promote here. There is a featurette "Reintroducing Pennyworth" and a case file on each of the season 3 episodes.
While I am not a fan of extreme violence, sexual content and profanity in my comic book films and TV series. The character driven episodes of Pennyworth are going to be right up some people's ally.
I must say that I think this Blu-ray set is a perfect way to see this series, as it is in the highest quality, and it is complete. So, you can binge watch this series in its entirety.
