Warner Archive Blu-ray Review: Neptune's Daughter (1949)

The beautiful Esther Williams and the hilarious Red Skelton starred in 3 feature films together during their career. There was 1944's Bathing Beauty and one of my favorite's 1951's Texas Carnival. But in-between these two collaborations in 1949 Esther and Red starred in a romantic comedy Neptune's Daughter.

Warner Archive Blu-rays lately have been something extremely special. We are talking new restorations and bonus features. Making these release classic film fans dreams come true. Now The Skelton/Williams film Neptune's Daughter is getting it's chance to shine on Blu-ray.

Aquatic dancer Eve Barrett (Esther Williams, Bathing Beauty), now partnered with Joe Backett (Keenan Wynn, The Absent-Minded Professor) in a swimsuit design company, tries to prevent her sister, Betty (Betty Garrett, Laverne and Shirley), from falling in love with Jose O'Rourke (Ricardo Montalban, Star Trek The Wrath of Khan), a suave South American polo player. Unbeknownst to Eve, Betty has actually fallen for Jack Spratt (Red Skelton, The Fuller Brush Man), masseur who is posing as Jose. To protect her sister, Eve finds the real Jose, agrees to a date and also falls in love.

Unlike in their first film Bathing Beauty Red and Esther's characters are not in love here. Neptune's Daughter is a very light musical romantic comedy. It moves along fast. Esther Williams is stunning and Red Skelton is hilarious.  Keenan Wynn, Ricardo Montalban and Betty Garrett make a great addition to this film. Talk about an all-star cast! Great stuff!

The film is transferred to Blu-ray featuring a brand new 4K scan. The film is presented in 1080p in the original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a DTS-HD Monaural audio. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Upon watching this Blu-ray in comparison to the DVD of the Esther Williams Collection set. Boy does this new Blu-ray blow that DVD out of the water. The picture is crisp and clean. The colors are bright and pop. The audio is a clear as a bell. There is no signs of damage to this print. This is a tremendous upgrade from the DVD. But Warner Archive didn't stop at a simply stunning looking transfer. They added a nice amount of bonus feature. Take a look at what is included.

* Callaway Went Thataway Excerpt
A  brief cameos of Esther Williams in the 1951 American comedy western film starring Fred MacMurray, Dorothy McGuire, and Howard Keel.

So as you can see in addition to a simply gorgeous restoration of this Technicolor classic, the bonus feature make this Blu-ray even better. It is always awesome to see bonus shorts and cartoons. It makes for an old fashioned "night at the movies"!
