You Can't Do That On Film (2004) {DVD Review}

The 1980s and 90s were the best times for shows on the network Nickelodeon. I remember these shows vividly including Rugrats, Doug, Hey Dude, Clarissa Explains it all, Are you afraid of the dark. But the show that started it all was a little show entitled You Can't Do That On Television.

Nickelodeon has become synonymous with green slime. But it all started with the sketch comedy show You Can't Do That On Television. In 2004 fan and filmmaker David Dillehunt went on a quest to discover why this show is so beloved even all these years later.

You can't do that on film follows filmmaker David Dillehunt for You Can't Do That On Film, the first and only feature-length documentary about the cult-classic children's television show, You Can't Do That On Television. This revolutionary program broke all the rules, let kids be kids, and taught viewers everywhere to avoid uttering the phrase, "I don't know."

The documentary features interviews with the original cast members including Les Lye, Christine McGlade, Alasdair Gillis, Adam Reid and Alanis Morissette. It truly is a remarkable little nostalgic look back at one of the most iconic kid shows from the 1980s.

There is no footage from the TV show. The reason for that is due to copywrite rights issues. These are the same kind of issues that have kept fans from receiving an official US DVD release of the series. The film
runs 1 hour and 15 minutes and is such a fast paced film you don't even realize it!

MVD Visual has transferred the film to DVD in it's full screen format, the soundtrack is a stereo audio. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Being that this is a fan made film, you can understand that the production values are not going to be as spectacular as big budget documentaries! Some scenes are very dark, but all in all it is a pretty nice, well produced documentary.

Now in addition to a great documentary about a fun little show, there is some cool bonus features included on this DVD. Take a Look!

Bonus Features:

* Rare Interview With Show Creator Roger Price

* Extended Interviews With Cast And Crew

* Recaps Of The SlimeCon and SlimeCon 2004 Fan Conventions And Cast Reunions

* Outtakes And Behind-The-Scenes Footage Of The Official Reunion Episode Titled Project 131

* The Director's Own 2006 Pilot for a New You Can't Do That on Television

These bonus features are really cool. It is awesome to see a
David Dillehunt's 2006 pilot for a new version of the show. However it was shot of green screen so the pilot looks a little less than spectacular, but I consider it very cool to have this as a bonus feature.

As a huge fan of 80s and 90s TV and documentaries I am so glad I had the opportunity to see this documentary. Also as a physical media supporter to have this film on DVD to where I can relive it over and over. Best thing ever!

If you love the old Nickeloden show You Can't Do That On Television you are going to love this new documentary. Head over to Amazon and order your copy of this DVD today.
