California (1963) {Reel Vault DVD Review}

Westerns are always so much fun to watch. There are also some westerns that are considered in the conversation of one of the best films in cinema history. Reel Vault has released one amazing little western entitled The Winds of Autumn.

Now just in time for the holiday season Reel Vault has released an additional western to their catalogue. This one to go along with the above western both on DVD. This one is 1963's California.

The film takes place in 1841, when a group of revolutionaries rise against the Mexican government in Monterey, California, seeking admission to the United States. Two brothers go head-to-head as Don Francisco leads the Mexican troops while Don Michael is in charge of the revolutionaries. To make matters worse both love the same woman the beautiful Marianna de la Rosa.

California was produced and directed by Hamil Petroff. The films was distributed by
American International Pictures an MGM division. American International Pictures is best known for it's Roger Corman horror films. But they released every kind of film imaginable.

Now California is a somewhat mediocre western with a sprinkling of swashbuckling adventure thrown in for good measure. But the cast doesn't take it that way they put everything into every scene and I can respect that.

The standout in this cast is Jock Mahoney (Yancy Derringer), but everyone is very believable in their roles. The cast includes; Charles Horvath (The Thing that Couldn't Die), Felix Locher (Curse of the Faceless Man, Roberto Contreras (Barbarosa), Susan Seaforth (Days of our lives), Faith Domergue (This Island Earth), James West, Jimmy Murphy (Hold That Hypnotist), Michael Pate (Hondo), Nestor Paiva (Revenge of the Creature), Penny Santon (Love with a proper stranger) and Rodolfo Hoyos (The Brave One).

Reel Vault has transferred this western to DVD in widescreen format and the soundtrack is a 2.0 audio. This transfer is really amazing here. The picture is sharp as a tack with no signs of damage to this print and the audio is as clear as a bell. The film is in glorious black and white!

Now like most I really enjoy the bonus features on the DVDs and Blu-ray, but California has no bonus features. But if you or someone you love enjoy those old b movie westerns this one is going to be right up your alley.
