Attack of the 50 ft. Woman (1958) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

In the 1950s there were a several science fiction films that featured storyline of humans changing size. They included, The Amazing Colossal Man (1957), the sequel War of the Colossal Beast (1958), and my personal favorite The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957).

In 1958 it was time for a woman to take the lead in one such sci-fi films, that film was Attack of the 50 ft. Woman. Now for the first time ever the good folks at Warner Archive Collection is giving this sci-fi cult classic on Blu-ray.

When socialite Nancy Archer (Allison Hayes) has a history of emotional instability and excessive drinking.  On a desert road she finds a glowing sphere and a huge creature inside. When she returns to town she find something else unsettling, her husband Harry Archer (William Hudson) in a bar with his new girlfriend Honey Parker (Yvette Vickers). Little does she know that the previous alien encounter would gave a tremendous growth spurt. With her new found size she goes after her cheating husband with revenge on her mind.

Now while The Incredible shrinking man is a masterpiece of sci-fi, Attack of the 50 ft. Women doesn't quite hit that mark. The story line is a bit unbelievable, but the acting is not. Everyone plays their roles to the tee. This B Sci-fi film come under the category of so bad it's good. That is why it has become a cult classic over the years.

Warner Archive Collection has transferred this cult classic in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a 2.0 Mono DTS-HD Master Audio. Finally there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This transfer boasts of a brand new 4K scan.

While examining this new 4K scan the picture is as sharp as a tack with no signs of age related imperfections. The dialogue is clear and the music is amazing. There is no hiss or pops in this new scan. It truly is a remarkable looking scan.

Now a simply gorgeous transfer of this cult classic is not all that is included on this Blu-ray, not by a longshot. Warner Archive added an archived audio commentary by Film Historian Tom Weaver and actress Yvette Vickers. Than there is the Original Theatrical Trailer.

Now while the bonus features are a bit meager, the gorgeous 4k Scan really does make up for the lacking bonuses. I think fans of B Sci-fi films are really going to want to add this one to their collections.

So if you love those low budget B movies, I highly recommend check out this new Blu-ray release from Warner Archive Collection of the 1950s cult classic Attack of the 50 ft. Woman. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
