Shadowlands (1993) {Retro VHS Blu-ray Review}

Anthony Hopkins has been in many amazing films during his career including, Silence of the Lambs, Thor, Remains of the Day, International Velvet and many many more. In 1993 he joined Debra Winger to tell the real life story of the unlikely love story of a famed writer.

Now this film Shadowlands has arrived on home video thanks to the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment. Now not only can film fans add this drama to their collection, but they can bring it home via the ultra cool Retro VHS line.

The film follows the world-renowned writer and professor C.S. Lewis (Anthony Hopkins), who is unmarried. He leads a gentleman’s life filled by intellectual pursuits, remaining untouched by any great passion until he meets Joy Gresham (Debra Winger). Joy is a feisty, abrasive New York divorcée whose sharp-edged, no-nonsense attitudes take Lewis by surprise. Bursting unexpectedly into Lewis’s world, Joy shocks his associates and awakens him to deep emotions he has written about but never experienced. Slowly, he opens his heart to this woman and their romance shatters the walls of his world. He soon discovers that life is made up of delicate balances and he must confront a terrible truth: that a heart awakened to great love is also opened to great pain.

The film was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough. Now most people will think of him as only John Hammond in the original Jurassic Park. But he was an amazing director. He directed such films as Chaplin, A Chorus Line, A Bridge too far and Gandhi. Amazing films. He brought that same skill to Shadowlands.

The story move along very nicely and as for the cast Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger have a real chemistry together that is undeniable. But the supporting cast is very nice as well.  Edward Hardwicke, Joseph Mazzello, James Frain, Julian Fellowes, Michael Denison, John Wood, Peter Firth, Tim McMullan and Robert Flemyng.

Mill Creek Entertainment has transferred Shadowlands to Blu-ray in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

As for bonus features Mill Creek Entertainment has given us the amazing VHS style slipcover. It looks just like something you would have rented back in the day. Including stickers that say "Recommended Movie", "MELT it left in car or in the sun" and "Bee Kind remember to Rewind. Take about retro.  And than on disc is a near 19 minute featurette entitled The Garden Valley: Scoring Shadowlands.

Now for the picture quality there are some mild imperfections, but when comparing Mill Creek Entertainment's release to the previous Universal Blu-ray, I think Mill Creek has defiantly
 got the edge on this one.

So if you enjoy a good love story and throw in that it is a true love story. You are going to love Shadowlands. And this Mill Creek Entertainment Retro Blu-ray in my opinion is the perfect way to collect it! Head over to
