The Diary of Anne Frank (1967) {Liberation Hall DVD Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

The Holocaust was arguably the single worse event in the history of our world. Lives extinguished by the evil of mindless dictator. But out of this was shining lights and lives one such life that lived on long after she passed was that of Anne Frank.

Anne Frank wanted nothing more than to be a writer. So while the Frank family locked themselves away from the evil Nazi regime, Anne wrote in her diary event of her life.

On November 26th, 1967 ABC produced a Sunday Night TV special based on The Diary of Anne Frank. The good folks at Liberation Hall released on DVD the TV version Of Mice and Men and now this TV version of The Diary of Anne Frank also gets it's chance to shine.

The event portrayed in this TV Event take place in the Nazi-occupied Holland in World War II. A shopkeeper hides two Jewish families in his attic. Young Anne Frank keeps a diary of everyday life for the Franks and the Van Daans, chronicling the Nazi threat as well as family dynamics. Including romance, jealousy, tension and the impending threat of Nazi capture always looming overhead.

This is an amazingly produced TV play. The acting is so great. Max von Sydow (Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stands out among the cast as Otto. But everyone is outstanding. Donald Pleasence (Halloween; Escape From New York) is Albert, Theodore Bikel (My Fair Lady; Fiddler On The Roof) is Hans, and Diana Davila (Play It Again; Sam; Dark Shadows) in the starring role as Anne.

This TV presentation is presented in it's original full screen format with a 2.0 audio soundtrack! As with Of Mice and Men this transfer there is some minor issues with this picture, but I didn't find them that bad to take away from the enjoyment of this film. These issues are forgivable3 when you think the TV production is almost 60 years old.

Included on this DVD is the entire ABC presentation complete with the 1967 television commercials. Watching this release is like taking a time machine to the past and witnessing this TV production as it first aired. Very cool!

So if you enjoyed the book The Diary of Anne Frank or TV from the 1960s, this TV version of The Diary of Anne Frank from Liberation Hall is one release you are going to want to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
