John Steinbeck was a prolific writer penning some of the greatest stories in history including Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, and one of his best in my humble opinion Of Mice and Men. Filmmakers are always looking for great stories to put to film and Steinbeck is one that is always searched out.
Now ever since the beginning of television there have been made for TV adaptions to novels even into the 60s and on April 31, 1968 Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men was adapted for the an ABC Wednesday Night Special event presentation.
The good folks at Liberation Hall have been releasing some these TV presentations on DVD and I could not be happier to see them. Now this 1968 Of Mice or Men TV movie event is the next to receive a physical media release.
The film follows two migrant workers, George Milton and Lennie Small. The two are are complete opposites George is a small but intelligent while Lennie is a large man with a mild mental disability. The duo find jobs on a ranch, Lennie develops an infatuation with the owner's daughter-in-law. When an opportunity for George and Lennie to own part of the ranch is presented to them it seems to be just what they have always wanted. But will Lennie's fascination with the beautiful woman destroy their dream? You'll have to see them film to find out!
This is one amazing TV movie produced by David Susskind. The acting is superb, with a whos who of acting legends like George Segal (The Goldbergs), Will Geer (The Waltons), Moses Gunn (Shaft), Joey Heatherton (My Blood Runs Cold), Nicol Williamson (Hamlet),
This TV presentation is presented in it's original full screen format with a 2.0 audio soundtrack! Examining this transfer there is some minor issues with this picture, but I didn't find them that bad to take away from the enjoyment of this film.
Included on this DVD is the entire ABC presentation complete with the 1968 television commercials. That is really interesting. It is like opening a time capsule. I can not truly put into words how much I truly enjoyed this release.
So if you love Steinbeck or TV from the 1960s Of Mice and Men from Liberation Hall is one release you are going to want to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
I highly suggest check out the other Liberation Hall classic TV presentation DVDs. Harvey, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Power and the Glory and The Paul New Trilogy.
