Ziegfeld Girl (1941) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

June is the birthday month of the Hollywood and musical icon Judy Garland. Probably everyone has seen a Judy Garland film during their lives. Now the good folks at Warner Archive collection have made this a special month for the 100th birthday.

In 1941 Judy Garland joined an all-star cast for the musical spectacle
 "Ziegfeld Girl". Now this film is getting a Blu-ray release from Warner Archive complete with awesome bonus features.

The film follows three New York girls who have dreams of performing in the iconic Ziegfeld Follies. Susan (Judy Garland) is a vaudeville performer, Sheila (Lana Turner) is as an elevator girl, and Sandra (Hedy Lamarr) is spotted by
the dance director after her husband auditions for a position in the orchestra. This all seems well and fine, but soon their career ambitions complicate their romantic relationships.

Ziegfeld was known for his elaborate productions and the movies were as well!  Ziegfeld Girl has amazing musical numbers, great acting and a classic story of love and ambition. Even though some footage from the earlier film The Great Ziegfeld was recycled for this one the production is spectacular.

With the triple threat of Garland Turner and Lamarr that's enough star power. But MGM went all out and loaded up the cast with some amazing talent including,
James Stewart, Tony Martin, Jackie Cooper, Edward Everett Horton, Eve Arden, Dan Dailey, Ian Hunter, Charles Winninger, Philip Dorn, Al Shean and Fay Holden.

Ziegfeld Girl has been transferred to Blu-ray from a brand new 4K scan from the best possible elements. The films is in 1080p and presented in it's original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD 2.0. This new 4K scan is crisp and clean and the audio crystal clear. It really is a remarkable looking and sounds transfer for a fun little film.

Now a remarkable transfer on Blu-ray is not where this ends, not by a long shot. Warner Archive added some really nice bonuses to this Blu-ray. Take a look at what is included.

* Introduction By Judy Garland Biographer John Fricke

* Vintage Musical Short-A New Romance Of Celluloid, We Must Have Music
