Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Ever since the beginning of cinema romantic dramas have been a proven successful formula for a film. Over the years many actresses and actors have graced the silver screen in these films.

Warner Brother complied a collection of 4 classic romantic comedies in one DVD set entitled Silver Screen Icons: Romantic Dramas. Let's take a look at what is included in this set.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
Disturbed Blanche DuBois moves in with her sister in New Orleans and is tormented by her brutish brother-in-law while her reality crumbles around her. ****

East of Eden (1955)
Two brothers in 1910s California struggle to maintain their strict, Bible-toting father's favor as an old secret about their long-absent mother comes to light. ***

Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
A rebellious young man with a troubled past comes to a new town, finding friends and enemies. ****

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
Brick is an alcoholic ex-football player who drinks his days away and resists the affections of his wife. A reunion with his terminal father jogs a host of memories and revelations for both father and son. ***

This set truly has a whos who of Hollywood in it from the great Elizabeth Taylor to Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Viven Leigh, Natalie Wood to the actor who was taken from the world way too soon James Dean. The acting is top notch to say they least and every one of these films truly are dramas that will keep you on the edge of your seat, clear up to the climax of the film.

All four films are housed on two DVDs One disc is dedicated to James Dean with his films Rebel without a Cause and East of Eden. The other features Marlon Brando is A Streetcar named Desire and Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

The films look amazing on DVD. The transfers of these films are crisp and the audio is clear. The films are presented in widescreen format except for A Streetcar Named Desire which is presented in it's original full screen format.

The menu screens are pretty unimpressive. The screen just has a picture of the star and the title of the two movies, you just choose which one you want to watch. There is also options for English and Spanish subtitles. As for bonus features there are none. That is a shame, but 4 classic films on one DVD set is pretty great.

Seeing Marlon Brando, Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor is tremendous, but truly the best part of this is the two films of James Dean. Dean is a legend. He was going to be something special, but he sadly was killed in a auto accident after filming just three feature films. So his films are the real feature of this set.

So if you love classic romantic dramas this set is for you.
