Biopic is defined as a movie dramatizing the life of a particular person, typically a public or historical figure. Call me crazy but I am a sucker for these type of films. Always have been and always will be.
When The Film Detective announced a brand new 4K transfer of the 1947 film The Fabulous Dorseys starring Tommy and Jimmy themselves I was excited to see how this restoration looked.
The film follows the life and times of musicians Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. Starting from their humble beginnings in Pennsylvania as sons of coal miner and musician, who has big dreams for his boys to not be coal miners but being big time musicians.
As they young boys turn to young adults Tommy and Jimmy take over the roles themselves. Than we witness them sharing their journeys from playing in little halls to their ultimate successes in the music business. And all the struggles as they fight brake-up and forgive and forget and reunite.
The Fabulous Dorseys is a spectacular biopic with amazing music and Tommy and Jimmy do a great job in this film, probably because they were not acting, they were playing themselves. But for music fans it will be exciting to see cameos by Paul Whiteman, Helen O'Connell, Art Tatum, Charlie Barnet, Bob Eberly, Henry Busse, Helen O'Connell, Mike Pingitore
The Fabulous Dorseys has been transferred in 4K from archival elements. It is in 1080p in it's original 1.37:1 aspect ratio and the soundtrack is a DTS-HD master audio 2.0. Now as I examined this new transfer in comparison to other prints. This new master puts the others to shame. The picture is sharp and the audio is clear as a bell. This truly is one remarkable restoration.
Now The Film Detective didn't just make a beautiful 4k transfer on this Blu-ray, no way. They added some very cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included in this set.
