The Slime People (1963)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

The 1950s and 60s B sci-fi horror movies were all the rage. Teenagers couldn't get enough of the off the wall crazy stories and the even crazier monsters. They would pack the drive-in and marvel and all the special effects, that we in this generation think are so cheezy.

Sci-fi films in those days always dealt with monsters awakened by or created by nuclear tests or wars. One of the crazy films from that era was 1963's The Slime People. Let's face it with that title you know you are in for B-Movie goodness.

The film follows Tom Gregory, a pilot (Robert Hutton) who is forced to land in Los Angeles after some difficulties in flight. But he doesn't find the hustle and bustle of the big city he instead finds the city almost deserted after a mysterious war. But even worse than that he finds a race of subterranean reptile-men. Now trapped in the fog there is one option, to fight back, with other survivors.

Robert Hutton pulls double duty in this film, as not only does he star in the film, but also directs it as well. This would be the only film he would ever direct. The supporting cast is okay, but the standout would have to be Les Tremayne, who quite a few great films during his career such as
The War of The Worlds, North by Northwest and The Fortune Cookie.

The producers thought that the idea of fog would lend to the mystery of the film and build tension with fear of the unknown. Plus probably covering up some of the shortcomings in the creature. There is just one problem with that. They used so many fog machines that it became impossible to see anything near the end of the film.

There is a term used for these B-movies "So bad it's good". I have witnessed some films that are just so bad their bad. But where does The Slime People rate? I would say that The Slime People has some very entertaining moments. I enjoyed the film, but I enjoy those bad movies. The average movie person will find it too slow paced with bad costume effects.

Some of the entertaining bad movies get a chance at another life and The Slime People was one of them.
The film was featured on the first season of the television show Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The good folks at Cheezy Movies are giving The Slime People a chance to live-on on home video via a DVDR. The film is presented in it's original full screen format in 1.33:1 aspect ratio and mono audio.
