Eye of the Devil (1966) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

John Lee Thompson was the Oscar Nominated director of The Guns of Navarone and also the director of the classic thriller Cape Fear.  In 1966 Thompson directed a star studded cast in a horror film entitled "Eye of the Devil" the likes of which audiences wouldn't see again until the 70s cult classic The Wicker Man.

Now The fine folks at Warner Archive have given this chilling and terrifying film a Blu-ray release that horror film fans can enjoy in high definition for years to come.

A French viticulturist
 (David Niven) returns to his family estate in Bordeaux with his wife (Deborah Kerr) and family. He arrives to find that the vineyard is facing a bad year. So the workers quietly follow old pagan rituals that call for the life of the marquis owner to save his crops during dry seasons.

Along with David Niven and Deborah Kerr the cast includes a very young Donald Pleasence (Halloween), David Hemmings,
Flora Robson, Emlyn Williams, Edward Mulhare, John Le Mesurier. and Sharon Tate in one of her final film roles before her tragic murder at the hands of the Manson family.

Eyes of the Devil is a film that still sends chills up and down the spine 55 years later. Running a mere 96 minutes the story is fast-paced, leaving no time to get bored with the story. And the chilling conclusion (Which we won't spoil.) will stay with you long after the end credits.

Warner Archive have transferred this film to Blu-ray on 1080p in 1.66:1 aspect ratio and in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0  The Blu-ray also added the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. I must say that this new transfer looks pristine. There is no signs of damage. The picture is crisp and the audio is clear.

The bonus features are a bit on the skimpy side. There is just the theatrical trailer. I wish there would have been an audio commentary or a making of feature. It would have made this release so much better. But for cult movie fans a HD copy of this film may just be enough to make this a must purchase.
