One Crazy Summer (1986) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Depending on your age you may remember saying or hearing "No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers dirty looks." This lyric was synonymous with summer. Summer was a time to take a break from all the hustle and bustle and just have some fun.

Such was the idea of the 1986 romantic/comedy entitled One Crazy Summer. This films has seen DVD releases, but now it is time for an upgrade. Thanks to Warner Archive Collection we can all upgrade our copies of this cult classic with a new Blu-ray release.

The film follows the summer of high school graduate Hoops McCann (John Cusack) and his best friend George who take a trip to Nantucket, Massachusetts after the ceremony. But call it fate, he meets a rocker-in-distress named Cassandra (Demi Moore). Her family's home is being threatened by developers and it is Hoops and his crazy array of friends to save the home on this "one crazy summer."

Savage Steve Holland wrote and directed this off the wall crazy summer movie. John Cusack and Demi Moore shine in their roles but everyone is perfectly cast. Even the expectedly crazy Bobcat Goldthwait as Egg Stork, yeah you read that right.

This film doesn't try to say anything socially relevant or politically important. It is just a film to help you escape all the cares of life and just laugh for an hour and a half. And it does that!

The film has been transferred in 1080p in widescreen format and 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a DTS-HD mono audio 2.0 English soundtrack. The colors are stunning and the picture is crisp and beach music heavy soundtrack is as clear as a bell! It is a beautiful looking transfer.

As for bonus features Warner Archive Collection have ported over the very awesome audio commentary by Savage Steve Holland, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Curtis Armstrong. As well as the theatrical trailer and there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Now One Crazy Summer has a very off beat kind of humor and won't appeal to everyone. Sort of like Family Guy or the Simpsons is not everyone's kind of humor. But those that know and love this film are going to love this upgrade.
