It is hard to believe it has been over ten years since Robert Kirkman's graphic novel made it's way to TV and became a phenomenon. The show spawned the spinoff series "Fear The Walking Dead" and the limited series The Walking Dead World Beyond.
World Beyond is soon to debut it's 2nd and final season. But before that happens it's time for the first season to get a home video release on Blu-ray and DVD. We received the Blu-ray release from RLJ Entertainment.
World Beyond follows the first generation of children that have grown up during the zombie apocalypse. When Iris and Hope receive a distress message from their father. The sister take off out of their safe haven along with bookworm Elton and social outcast Silas.
Disc One
1. Brave Iris welcomes an enigmatic ally to their community, while Hope questions the visitor's motives.
2. The Blaze of Gory The group adjusts to the reality of life beyond their community's walls; Iris attempts to take charge, in spite of Hope's reservations.
3. The Tyger and the Lamb Burdened by their pasts, members of the group adopt opposing strategies for dealing with a massive obstacle.
4. The Wrong End of a Telescope The group seeks shelter from a storm inside an abandoned high school; while re-supplying.
Disc Two:
5. Madman Across the Water While the group works together to cross the Mississippi River, a plot to steer the teens back home hits a snag.
6. Shadow Puppets When an unexpected newcomer reveals information that
could help them reach their destination, the group cuts a deal.
7. Truth or Dare While the group searches for something to advance their quest, one of them recalls their struggles in the early days of the apocalypse.
Disc Three:
8. The Sky Is a Graveyard A horrific discovery finds the group at a crossroads and prompts one of them to revisit past trauma.
9. The Deepest Cut A series of setbacks causes a member of the group to
reevaluate their role in the mission.
10. In This Life A divided group struggles to reunite; others set their sights on the greater good.
This series is carried by it's young cast of Aliyah Royale as Iris Bennett, Alexa Mansour as Hope Bennett, Hal Cumpston as Silas Plaskett, and Nicolas Cantu as Elton Ortiz. Each and ever one of them really put everything they have in their roles and it shows.
When I heard of this show I felt this was going to be same old rehashing of people trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. And let's face it, it is to a degree. But putting kids (who have been living in a safe haven) in the middle of zombie trouble is unique. The kids have all their teenage troubles just intensified by the zombie uprising.
The picture quality is high definition and crystal clear picture and sound as can be expected from a new release. And as you can see above the episodes have been spread across three Blu-ray discs giving the maximum amount of bit rate for the episodes. They really do look great.
Now as for bonus features on this Blu-ray. There is first a short "Look at the series", a "Meet the Characters" featurette and finally a almost half hour Making of Season 1 feature
These are nice bonus features albeit a little light. And one other downer is usually with Blu-ray you get a bonus of a digital copy of the movie or season of the show. We don't receive that here. But it is still a pretty nice Blu-ray set.
So in the final analysis while The Walking Dead: World Beyond may not be as great as the original series. But I feel trying to compare it to that is a but unfair. I think this series is something that Walking Dead and Zombie fans will definitely get a lot of enjoyment out of! The average TV fans maybe not so much!
