Punk rock or otherwise known as just 'punk' is a genre of music that started in the 1970s. musicians wanted to do music their way. breaking the rules and rejecting the system to play music the way they wanted to.
Punk bands would begin getting cult followings and that would record self produced albums and distribute them through independent record labels and gain big popularity.
Through the years many of these punk bands have become iconic in the music industry. Now a new documentary explores the punk music scene, musicians and what made the music implant itself in the hearts of fans all these years.
Punk the Capital explores the punk rock scene that erupted in Washington DC. No doubt as the punk rock music took roots in the Nation's Capital it was going to (and did) face major backlash. Than how the punk rock scene transitioned into the hardcore music scene.
Punk the Capital is a film by James June Schneider, Paul Bishow, and Sam Lavine, and what an interesting documentary it is. The film traces the roots of punk music from DC and how it branched out. How it started as a do-it-yourself music industry and became a phenomenon.
I have to say it is so cool to see these musicians such as Bad Brains, Henry Rollins, and Ian MacKaye as older adults. Punk rock fans will know these names very well as they share their thoughts on what made the punk music scene what it was.
The film uses some very cool old footage of music concerts and still shots to enhance this documentary. 'Punk the Capital' really is a perfect time capsule for music history. For generations to come people will hear of how punk rock began and this film will show people how it started and progressed.
As a small warning there is some profanity in this documentary. So parental guidance is suggested.
This Blu-ray and DVD release not only has the 90 minute documentary, but there is some great bonus features as well. Included is some additional footage:
* Void and Friends
* Scream meets The Hangman
* The Slickee Boys
* The seminal WGTB Concert
* Subtitles in Eglish, French, Spanish, and Portugese
In the final analysis while I was in the punk rock scene I found this documentary eye opening and really entertaining. I love to experience different things and seeing the punk rock movement through this documentary was really nice. Kudos to James June Schneider, Paul Bishow, and Sam Lavine on a great documentary that I feel is required viewing for music fans.
So if you are a fan of punk music or documentaries I think this is one documentary that you will find super interesting. It is playing in virtual theaters and is available on Blu-ray and DVD.
