Western Classics II (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Westerns were al the rage for many years. They were so popular that the film companies were churning them out like butter. Now the art of the western is almost lost. That is why it is so cool to have companies like Kino Lorber keeping these classic westerns alive on Blu-ray!

KL Studio Classics have been releasing some absolutely amazing western Blu-rays, now comes the next adventure. This time around it is a three movie Blu-ray set of westerns from the 50s entitled Western Classics II. Let's take a look at what is included in this collection.

Film Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Redhead from Wyoming (1953) In Wyoming, town sheriff Stan Blaine finds himself in the middle of a war between greedy cattle barons and newcomer settlers who compete for public lands and unbranded stray cattle. ***

Pillers of the Sky (1956) Violece erupts when a road is built through government-granted Native American land. A cavalry scout, reluctant to fight in a war that he tried to prevent, slowly learns to respect the men he is fighting alongside, but the battle is a losing one. ***

Gun for a Coward (1957) Three brothers -- Will (Fred MacMurray), Harry (Dean Stockwell) and Bless (Jeffrey Hunter) clash during a cattle drive. Bless never acted during a violent situation that got their father killed. Causing Will and Harry think Bless is a coward. ***

I have been immersing myself in westerns for a little while now and for me the 50s westerns was when it was at it's best. You had some of the biggest names in Hollywood history strapping on a gun and taking an old west journey. This collection we see three major stars Maureen O'Hara, Lee Marvin and Fred MacMurray.

Each of these films are thrilling western adventures. Redhead from Wyoming is presented in it's original full screen format where the other two are presented in their widescreen. The colors are bright in each of these films and there is just the right amount of film grain. These transfers are so good that they put you right in the middle of the action!

KL Studio Classics put some really nice audio commentaries on these three Blu-ray releases. Redhead from Wyoming we get to hear from Film historian Samm Deighan. Than in Pillars of the Sky its Film Historian Toby Roan. And finally Gun for a Coward Author and Film historian Lee Gamblin takes the lead and drops knowledge. Each and every one of these commentaries are must viewing. They are that good. There is also theatrical trailers for each of these films.

I really enjoy the collections that Kino Lorber Studio Classics release and this one is no different. This Blu-ray set it getting a place of prominence in my collection. It is that good of a release. I can't wait to see what might be next in Western Classics Volume 3. I am sure they will out do themselves as always.

If you love the 50s westerns. I can not recommend this set enough. It is so action and old west fun. It will have you on the edge of your seat. Head over to Amazon.com and order your copy today.
