Rankin Bass is known for their amazing animated releases. We all remember the holiday specials Frosty the Snowman or Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. The Rankin Bass specials are required yearly viewing in our house.
In 1977 Rankin Bass produced a Made-For-TV fantasy adventure horror film entitled The Bermuda Depths. This film has become sort of a cult classic over the years. Warner Archive Collection knowing how much fans love their cult films, decided to give this film a Blu-ray release.
The film follows a scientist (Burl Ives), his student (Carl Weathers) and a young man (Leigh McCloskey) who happens to be haunted by nightmarish memories of his Bermuda childhood. The Trio investigate the briny deep are threatened by a giant turtle and the spirit of a young brunette swimmer in the Bermuda Triangle.
The story is a very well told one. There is a bit of a campiness to the film, but personally I think it gives this film character. The cast of this films is something special with Burl Ives, Apollo Creed himself, Carl Weathers and Connie Sellecca.
Now some people may argue this film was just a way to capitalize on the phenomenon of Jaws. I respectively but whole-heartedly disagree. This is a mythological, fantasy horror adventure. Is there similarity yes. But those are two very different films.
The film transfer comes from a 4K scan and looks absolutely stellar in 1080p. The colors are vibrant. The blues of the Bermuda depths are really something to see. And as for the audio it is a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track. I am so impressed with this new 4K scan. It is trully a thing of beauty.
Now the cool thing with this Blu-ray release is that Warner Archive had put not only the original 1.33:1 full screen TV Version, but also the1.85:1 International Theatrical Version as well. That is such a cool bonus! I love it!
Than there is also an audio commentary by Author/Film Historian Amanda Reyes and Kindertrauma co-founder Lance Vaughan. They bring a lot of interesting facts that you probably never would have thought about! This is a very cool audio commentary. But on a side not it the audio commentary can not be heard while watching the international aspect ratio version.
So if you are looking for a film to escape the cares of this world, even if it is for a short period of time. I really highly suggest taking a vacation to The Bermuda Depths with this Warner Archive Blu-ray.
Fans of Rankin/Bass, scifi, adventure, B horror movies are going to love this Blu-ray. You can order our copy of this stellar Made-For-TV movie on Blu-ray by heading to MovieZyng.
