Some horror films are scary, some are cheezy and some are historic. 1961's The Mask is a little bit of all three. I know you are reading this and probably asking why is this historic. Well, it was the first Canadian film to be distributed in the US by a major studio Warner Brothers.
After the shocking death of a patient, psychiatrist Dr. Allan Barnes comes into possession of the ancient tribal mask. The mask was rumored to have driven the young man to his ultimate doom. Dr. Barnes puts on the mask, and is inundated with horrific visions of monsters, occultists, and ritual torture. He believes the mask has opened a portal to his mind, and wants to continues to explore this world. Even at the threat of those closest to him.
When most Americans read the movie title The Mask most would probably think of the Jim Carrey crazy comedy adventure, not so much this one! That is a bit of a shame. Because this film The Mask really is a fun tale for fans of those low budget sci-fi fare.
There is some cheesiness in the acting, but all in all the film is a very entertaining tale. The 3D effects are pretty good when you figure the low budget. B horror movie fans are going to want to check this one out.
Now Cheezy Flicks and MVD Visual joined forces to bring us this film on DVD. The film is presented in it's original 4:3 aspect ratio. Thankfully no stretching of the screen is found in this release. This has become a bad trend in this day in age. Many TV shows and movies are being stretched to fit wide screen TVs. They were not mean't to be seen that way and thankfully Cheezy Flicks and MVD Visual left this film to play it's original way.
The film has been digitally remastered and it looks pretty nice on this DVD. The film also includes a pair of 3D glasses so your can enjoy the 3D goodness. I have to be honest the story is a bit slow at times and the cheese, this is not a film for everyone. But for those who love the b-horror movies, go ahead take a chance and "put the mask on now!"
If you like those 60s B Horror Movies. I do suggest giving The Mask a chance. I believe you will find a lot in it to enjoy. Head over to CheezyFlicks.com and see their library of awesome cheesy titles.
