Jetsons The Movie (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

The Jetsons TV series from the 1960s was not a huge success like The Flintstones, but over the years it has become a classic. Fans love to dream of the future with flying cars, robot maids and all the other gadgetry.

Almost 30 years after the original series first took the air, Hanna-Barbera Studios produced a Jetson's movie. Now this nostalgic animated film makes it's US Blu-ray debut thanks to the fine folks at Kino Lorber.

Spacely Sprockets and Spindles has opened a new mining colony on an asteroid, but it keeps being sabotaged. So Mr. Spacely promotes George Jetson to be the new head of the factory. George must relocates the family to the far reaches of space. While the family are enjoying the move, George finds trouble at the new job right away.

All the original cast was brought back to record the voices for their characters in the movie. But sickness and politics destroyed most of that. George O'Hanlon had a stroke and died as well as Mel Blanc died both during the production of this movie. Jeff Bergman was brought in to fill in the scenes they were not able to. He did a masterful job.

Hanna-Barbera brought in pop star Tiffany to sing 3 songs
"I Always Thought I'd See You Again", "You and Me" and "Home". That was all well and fine. But what bothered me the most was that they brought in Janet Waldo who voiced Judy Jetson and let her record everything. Than took her out of the film and let Tiffany voice Judy Jetson. Not that she did a bad job it's just when you have the original. You stay with that. It all came down to money. They felt  having a popstar doing the voice would bring bigger box office numbers. I think it backfired.

The film has is presented in
1080p with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio and the audio choices are with a DTS 5.1 and 2.0 lossless audio tracks. The film looks nice. When comparing the DVD release to this new Blu-ray release. It looks to be a bit of an upgrade. It's not out of this world but HD is HD and I love seeing this movie on Blu-ray.

Seeing Jetsons the Movie on Blu-ray is awesome. But the best part of this new Kino Lorber Blu-ray is the special features. Take a look at what is included.

• Audio Commentary by Author/Film Historian Lee Gambin
• Audio Interview with Voice Actor Jeff Bergman (George Jetson / Mr. Spacely / Board Member)
• The Theatrical Trailer

Now I have to say that the Lee Gambin drops a lot of knowledge on the listener. And the audio interview with Jeff Bergman..... WOW! You can really see working on this movie was not just a job it was a dream come true. I love that. The bonus features is where this release shines.

If you love Hanna-Barbera animation as much as I do I think you are going to want to upgrade your DVD of Jetsons the Movie to this Blu-ray. Head over to Amazon.com and order your copy today.
