Blu-ray Review: Eddie Macon's Run

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

At the time of this review, we recently lost Hollywood Legend Kirk Douglas who passed away at the age of 103. What a life lived what a legacy of films left behind.

Mill Creek Entertainment has released on Blu-ray a film in Kirk Douglas' later career. The film is from 1983 and is entitled Eddie Macon's Run. This is the first time this film has been available on Blu-ray in the United States.

Eddie Macon (John Schneider) has been harshly imprisoned for a run-in with his boss and driving while intoxicated. But Eddie Macon can't handle jail so he plans on escaping and meeting his wife and son in Mexico where they can live free. There is just one problem veteran cop Carl Marzack (Douglas). He is not about to let this one run to Mexico. Oh no ! Not on his watch.

What follows in an action-packed film. Kirk Douglas brings his usual intensity to his role Marzack. John Schneider is great as the title character Eddie Macon. In addition, John Scheider sings a some songs on the movie soundtrack as well. The supporting cast is good but look out for an appearance by John Goodman.

The film is rated PG. But don't let that fool you. This was before the PG-13 ratings. This film is filled with adult language and violence. This really should be at least a PG-13 rating. This is a good tale of life, love and forgiveness. Jeff Kanew did a nice job of co-writing and directing this film for the screen. The story is really full of heart. I would say for mature teens and adults this is a good movie.

As for the Blu-ray release this film has been transferred in high definition widescreen format and in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is DTS-HD Master audio 2.0. This is a really nice film transfer. The picture is sharp and the colors are bright. It really looks and sounds stunning. As for bonus features, there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

As we remember the contribution that Kirk Douglas made to the film industry this may be one you want to add to your collection. I am glad to have it as part of mine.
