Out of the Blue (1947) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

There have been many films made since the beginning of the motion picture industry. Some are called classics and many great films fall through the cracks of time and are more or less forgotten. But ClasssicFlix has been giving some of these amazing films a chance to live forever on home video that would probably never get a chance.

ClassicFlix has been hitting home run after home run with these releases. Including Blondie The Complete TV Series, The Stand-In, Michael Shayne Movie Collection and many more. Well, now it's time for another forgotten film to shine. This time the screwball comedy Out of the Blue.

Arthur Earthleigh (George Brent) is dominated by his wife Mae (Carole Landis) and annoyed by his neighbor, artist and swinging bachelor's German Shepherd. When his wife goes off to visit her sister, Arthur visits a bar where he's picked up by interior decorator Olive (Ann Dvorak) who comes home with him. Olive is tipsy but Arthur orders her to leave, but instead, she spends the night in the guest room unbeknownst to Arthur. Waking up the next day Arthur discovers Olive has not only spent the night but redecorated the room. In attempting to get her to leave he knocks Olive down to the floor where he thinks she has died. What is Arthur to do? What follows is an off the wall crazy chaine of events that must be seen.

The film was based on the short story by Vera Caspary who also co-wrote the screenplay. It is a really well-written script. Also the film boasts of an amazing all-star cast including; George Brent, Virginia Mayo, Carole Landis, Turhan Bey, Mary Elizabeth Patterson, and many more. This is a really funny comedy it is a shame it was more or less forgotten over the years. Maybe now with this release, it will be discovered by a new generation and get some of the recognition it deserves.

As for the film's transfer to Blu-ray. The film is presented in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.37:1 is rendered in this 1080p transfer using the AVC codec. And the audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono sound mix.

I have to say the looks and sounds amazing! The film has been cleaned up and it sharp and crystal clear. Other than just a tiny bit of scratches in the picture. But it is so small you will barely notice it.  The audio is clean there is no muffled audio no pops. This is one amazing restoration.

As for bonus features; included on this Blu-ray are trailers for other Classic Flix releases including; Merrily we live, Stand-in, Tomorrow is forever, Blondie the TV series, and Casanova Brown - Frank Morgan Montage. Also as a really nice bonus is the Blu-ray cover. When you open the Blu-ray and take the disc outr it reveals a scene from the film on the inside cover. That is a pretty nice little feature.

ClassicFlix has done it again. They have made a must add release to any classic film fan's library. This film is available on Blu-ray or DVD. I highly recommend this release. Head over to ClassicFlix.com and get your copy today.
