Crime and Punishment {DVD Review}

Reviewed by Jason S. Lockard

Novels being made into feature films have been going on since some of the first films rolled into theaters. In 1935 Crime and punishment based on Fyodor Dostoyevski’s novel debuted. For the 80th anniversary, Mill Creek Entertainment released this classic on DVD.

This film stars Peter Lorre in just his second English-speaking role as Roderick Raskolnikov. An impoverished student struggling with the nature of good and evil. He is riddled with guilt and paranoia after he committed a murder he felt was just.

After watching this film it’s hard to believe that Peter Lorre had to fight to get this film made and star in it! The film is riveting and exciting. The adaption of Dostoyevski's novel is a well-done piece of cinema.

As for the DVD, the film is transferred in its original full-screen format 1.33:1 aspect ratio. the picture looks and sounds amazing. Very little signs of damage to the picture. Sadly there are no bonus features on this release, however.

So if your a fan of classic film like myself having a beautiful copy of the film will be enough! Besides to date this is the only way to own this one DVD. I highly recommend it!
