The term 'Spaghetti western' was a title used for Italian made western films. These films were quite popular and many were made. Probably the most well-known Spaghetti Westerns were directed by Sergio Leone. And most notably the Dollars Trilogy starring Clint Eastwood. These films would make Eastwood a star!
But there were many great spaghetti western. And now the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment has released two amazing action packed spaghetti westerns on Blu-ray. Let's take a look at what is included in this double feature release.
Our Rating System:
**** = Don’t Miss it!
*** = Worth a look.
** = An Ok way to spend an evening.
* = You haven’t missed anything.
Fort Yuma Gold (1966) The film is also known as "For a few dollars more". The film is loosely based on the novel Michel Strogoff by Jules Verne. At the end of the Civil War, a Confederate Major named Sanders continues the fight against the North. Former Rebel Gary Diamond (Giuliano Gemma billed here as Montgomery Wood) leads two Union soldiers stop Sanders before he can raid Fort Yuma. ***
Damned hot day of fire (1966) The film is known as "Gatling Gun" and "Machine Gun Killers". Richard Gatling offer the machine gun he has invented to the government, but before that happens he is kidnapped along with his invention and held for a million dollar ransom. So a condemned cowboy Chris Tanner tries to clear his name by rescuing the inventor. ***
These two films are two of Quentin Tarantino's favorites, and it's no wonder. This are action packed, shoot'em up spaghetti westerns.While the stories may not be amazingly written or the acting is not on par with some of the great actors of Hollywood history, these two films still are a great source of entertainment. And after all that is what we are looking for.
These two films are presented in 1080p High definition 2.35:1 widescreen format and in Uncompressed LPCM 2.0 audio. Now while there is some imperfections in the films, scratches and pop ect. Fans of Tarantino films know you expect that in his films. In my opinion those imperfection lend to the charm of those films.
Now as for one amazing plus. Usually when you get a spaghetti western you normally got a cropped full screen version. Where the print was so horribly faded, and even some of the film had been cut out! Well, in these two presentation we get the uncropped, unedited film. Granted in the second film some scenes in English were lost. So to make it a true full unedited movie they reintegrated scenes (of which there are only a few) have Italian audio and English subtitles. The film prints don't look faded out at all to me!
