Beyond Atlantis (1973)

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Eddie Romero and John Ashley worked together many time bringing us such films as, Brides of Blood, Mad Doctor of Blood Island and Beast of Blood. In 1973 they released a unique tale of the myth of Atlantis with Beyond Atlantis. Now the good folks at VCI Entertainment and MVD Visual is giving this cult classic a HD release. Let's take a look.

The film follows a band of rag tag fortune hunters  in the search for a buried treasure. They investigate many islands to the south of the Philippines and discover an unknown civilization that may be descendants of the lost continent of Atlantis. The human-fish creatures, have pearlized eyes and are able to stay underwater for long periods of time. But this lost tribe needs outsiders for mating. So when the band of adventurers are capture is becomes a fight for their lives and the treasure!

This film is based on a story by Stephanie Rothman and is typical B movie fare. The cast is pretty impressive for a B horror film. The cast includes, Patrick Wayne, John Ashley, Leigh Christian and horror icon Sid Haig. It was one of very few family-oriented B movies to come out of the Philippines". The reason for this was star Patrick Wayne's insistence that the film be a family friendly.

The underwater scenes are a stunning piece of cinema. But the acting is a bit hammy at times, but you come to expect that from B movies, that is part of the fun. The make-up does look a tad goofy, but again that is some of the charm of the B movies.

The film has been restored from a 2K scan of the original 35mm negative.  It has been transferred in 1080p presented in 1.87:1 widescreen format. The audio is in 2.0 mono track. All in all the transfer looks and sounds pretty impressive to me.

Now for the bonus features include, The original Theatrical trailer, Television spots, John Ashley remembered, photo and press book gallery, an audio commentary featuring Howard S. Berger and Andrew Leavold. Finally Berger does a writes about the film it can be found on the inside of the cover.

B movie fans will love this transfer and the disc is loaded with bonus features. This is an absolute must add for any B Movie fanatic.
