Astro Boy The Complete Series {DVD Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Who doesn't enjoy some good anime action? And it doesn't come much better than Astro Boy! Originally a comic under the name Mighty Atom. It was made into a TV series Astro Boy in 1963 that re imagined in 1980. Than rebooted once again in 2003 and aired on Cartoon Network and Kid’s WB.

Now thanks to the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment that Astro Boy 2003 series is on DVD. Let's take a look at the series. The series takes place in the future, where robots are apart of human life, and the machines are slowly evolving. Even though Artificial Intelligence is part of life there are humans who can't stand the thought of robots that can't be controlled. And there are robots that want humanity wiped out.

Amid this turmoil, Dr. Tenma creates a robot boy modeled after his deceased son. With rockets for arms and legs, lasers in his fingers, super hearing, X-ray vision, and immense strength, Astro only springs into action when someone is threatened. He simply wants to bring harmony to men and robots.

The 2003 rebooted series sadly only lasted 50 episodes. Here is the episodes included on the 4 DVDs.

Disc One

Power Up! / Rocket Ball / Destination Deimos / Into Thin Air / Rainbow Canyon / Atlas (1) / Astro vs Atlas (2) / Neon Express / Franken / The Venus Robots /

Disc Two
Robot Circus / Reviving Jumbo / Little Sister, Big Trouble / Micro Adventure / Only a Machine / Robot Hunters / The Rise of Pluto (1) / Fall of Acheron (2) / Robot Boy / Dawn of the Techno-Revolution / Dragon Lake / The Legend of Tohron / Lost In Outland

Disc Three
March of the Micro Bears / Deep City / The Blue Knight / Old Dog, New Tricks / Hydra-Jacked / The Case of the Phantom Fowl / Geo Raider / Gideon / The Secret of Blue Knight / Fairy Tale / Shape Shifter / Firebird / Space Academy

Disc Four
Atlas Strikes Back / Battle-Bot / Time Hunters / Escape from Volcano Island / Avalanche! / Battle of Steel Island / Undercover / Into the Dragon's Lair / Night Before the Revolution / Robotonia / Showdown in Robotonia / Journey to Tomorrow / Astro Reborn / The Final Battle

The episode are very cinematic in presentation. You can easily get lost in the action and the story that you soon forget your even watching a cartoon series. The episodes in this collection are presented in full screen format and 2.0 English audio. The quality of these episodes look great to me. I see very little sign of degradation on these episodes even though there are 13 or 14 episodes on certain discs.

As for the packaging All four DVD discs are stacked one on top of the other in the DVD case. This set comes with an ultra cool red and white slipcover. Than the actual DVD cover has the ruby red background with Astro Boy flying over the logo! This is a collectors item. I love it!

In the final analysis is this series as good as the original? Some say yes others maybe have another opinion. To me I think it is a great representation of the character for a newer generation. And I am proud to have it in my collection!

So if your a fan of Astro Boy, Anime or superhero cartoon! It would make a great addition to your collection. And let's face it 50 episodes in one collection.. Super! I recommend you head over to www.MillCreekEnt.com or your local DVD provider today.
