My Samurai (1992) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

MVD Rewind Collection has been giving cult classic films the high-end releases fans are just loving. The latest one is 1992 martial arts film, My Samurai.

The film follows a young boy named Peter McCrea. After he witnesses a gang murder, he is thrust into a dangerous world where strength and power are the keys to survival. His only hope is Young Park, a powerful martial arts master with a gift for destroying any opposition. On the run from the gang and the police, Young Park must teach Peter the secrets of self-defense - and inner strength. From one action-packed sequence to the next, Peter learns about courage, force, and himself - so that he may confront the ultimate challenge of his life.

So My Samurai is a snapshot of the 90s. The film unashamedly tries to capitalize on the success of Karate Kid. And while it doesn't have the same impact as that classic, it is not without charm. The story is simple but well written. The acting is good, everyone gives their all to their roles.

Now for the Blu-ray release itself. The film has been transferred in HD 1090p and is in widescreen format in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio is in English 2.0 Stereo. There is also an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The copy of this film looks and sounds pretty amazing. I am very impressed at the video quality, MVD Rewind always does a great job with these releases.
