Weird Science (1985) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In the 1980's some of the most memorable films were brought to us by one man, John Hughes. Films such as; National Lampoon's Vacation, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day off and so many more.

Well, Arrow Video knows how much people love these 80's films. So they have release one of John Hughes 80's classics Weird Science on Blu-ray.

The film follows misfits teens Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith). While watching the original Frankenstein movie, they decide to design their ideal woman on a computer, and a freak electrical accident brings her to life in the form of the superhuman Lisa (Kelly LeBrock). She outfits Gary and Wyatt in cool clothes, surprises them with a Porsche and helps them stand up to jerks Ian (Robert Downey Jr.) and Max (Robert Rusler). But, all the while, the boys must hide Lisa's existence from Chet (Bill Paxton), Wyatt's nightmare of a big brother.

Re-watching this film after all these years, I was expecting to find it not as fun as I did as a kid! I am glad to say I was wrong! The story still holds up after all these years. The acting is off the wall funny! I even noticed, breaking of the 4th wall that I didn't notice when I was a kid as both Gary and Wyatt looked directly at the camera at certain points in the film as a wink and a nod. I enjoyed it just as much now as I did then.

The film has been restored from a 4K scan of the original negative and in original lossless stereo audio. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
This new transfer looks stunning. There is not a blemish to be seen.

Also included on this blu-ray is three versions of the film: the theatrical cut; the extended cut, and the TV version. The film does contain some adult language, sexual situations and brief nudity. So the TV version is a perfect addition for those who want to show this awesome film to younger audiences.

I remember watching the TV version as a young kid. Now having all three versions of the film is on blu-ray is amazing. But Arrow Video as we have seen so many time is never satisfied with just a little bit of info on a Blu-ray they loads this disc with tons of bonus features as well. Let's take a look at what special bonus features are included in this set.
