Enigma (1982)

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the Soviet Union and the United States with its allies after World War II. Many amazing Cold War films have been made in film history. The Manchurian Candidate, The Third Man, North by Northwest, just to name a few.

In 1982 Martin Sheen and Sam Neill took the reigns in a cold war film entitled, Enigma. Now S'more Entertainment and MVD Marquee Collection are bringing the fans this film on Blu-ray.

There is a plot to kill five Soviet dissidents on Christmas Day. Alex Holbeck (Sheen) as he is recruited as a CIA agent. He is given the task to steal an Enigma code scrambler. Little does he know he is just a pawn on the chess board.

When he arrives in Berlin, Alex finds that the KGB knows he is there. He uses numerous disguises to escape capture. Soon he enlists Karen, a former lover's help. She is asked to seduce Dimitri Vasilikov (Neill), the KGB man in charge of the hunt for Alex. Will he succeed in escaping with his life? You'll have to seethe film for yourself.

The story plot can be a bit hard to follow if you don't pay attention. It's easy to get lost. That is a major downside. As for the production, the costume and set design is very believable. The acting of Martin Sheen, Sam Neill and Brigitte Fossey is very well done. But that still doesn't help a complicated script.

It is good to note that this film is an adult film, there is violence, a good amount of profanity and there is also some nudity. So keep this in mind when deciding to watch this film.

The Blu-ray release presents this film in HD 1.77:1 widescreen aspect ratio and Dolby digital audio. The film looks and sound pretty good in my opinion. As for special features there is that theatrical trailer and a photo gallery.

So if you love Cold War films this is probably right up your alley! The film is available on Blu-ray and DVD Head over to www.MVDShop.com today or you can pick up a copy at Amazon.com.
