Man with a camera: The complete series (DVD Review)

Reviewed Jason S. Lockard

Charles Bronson is known for his tough guy characters in the movies. But throughout the 1950s he spent his acting career guest starring in TV until he landed the lead in an ABC TV series entitled Man with a camera. Now the great folks at Mill Creek Entertainment bring us this series on DVD.

The series follows Mike Kovac (Bronson), a former World War II combat photographer who now freelances in New York City. Mike specializes in getting the hard to get photographs that others can not get. On a weekly basis Mike would find himself assisting newspapers, insurance companies, the police and private individuals. So Kovac was a kind of private eye.

In the 50s film noirs were all the rage so The Man with a camera was like a mini film noir. This show boasted of some great guest stars as well, including Angie Dickinson (Police Woman), Sebastian Cabot (Family Affair), Gavin MacLeod (Mary Tyler Moore Show and Love Boat), Harry Dean Stanton (Cool Hand Luke), Yvonne Craig (Batman) and many, many more.

Man with a Camera was filmed at Desilu Studios. The series had two abbreviated seasons and aired on Friday nights at 9:00 pm. The series consisted of only 29 episodes. All the episodes in this series are entertaining, but some episodes that stood out to me were; Second Avenue Assassin: Joey Savoyan, a professional boxer with a bad reputation from Mike's old neighborhood, has been winning fights that, unbeknownst to him, had been fixed.  Mute Evidence: Mike is invited to the farm of a retired doctor who does research concerning deaf mutes, but, unbeknownst to Mike, the doctor has been murdered. The Killer: On his way to Los Angeles on an assignment for a mysterious client, Mike is shot in a small Nevada town by an unknown assailant. Hot Ice Cream: An amusement park owner gives Mike a picture of a man being fatally shot underneath a roller coaster, but the body is missing.

This DVD set includes all 29 episode on 2 DVDs. The audio and video quality is quite good considering you get 15 season 1 episodes on disc 1 and 14 season 2 episodes on disc 2.  Having the entire series in one set is so cool!

This DVD set is a TV lovers dream come true. I really enjoyed this series and recommend this collection highly! So if your a fan of film noirs, classic TV, or Charles Bronson this series is for you. Head over to Amazon and order your copy of this classic TV series today!
