In a couple years, Auntie Mame will celebrate the 70th anniversary of its film release. Warner Archive Collection has taken this film classic and restored it and released it on 4K UltraHD and Blu-ray combo pack!
Synopsis: Reprising her Broadway triumph, Rosalind Russell received her fourth Oscar nomination & third Golden Globe Award as the marvelous madcap woman who lives life to the hilt. "Life is a banquet," Mame says, "and most poor suckers are starving to death!" With wit, style and a seasoned cast to dish out humor and heart with gusto, Auntie Mame is a full-course meal of entertainment magic.
Some film don't age well. They just seem outdated or the thoughts portrayed in the film just don't jive with today's landscape. Well, Auntie Mame is not that kind of film. In fact I think as this film ages it gets better. The idea of living life to its fullest is a great thought that simply never gets old.
Auntie Mame has a wonderful screenplay and simply stellar acting lef by the great Rosalind Russell and supported by, Forrest Tucker, Peggy Cass, Jan Hadzlik, and Coral Browne.
Warner Archive Collection has restored Auntie Mame and transferred it to 4K in 2160p and Blu-ray in 1080p, and it is presented in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio tracks to choose from: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and the original theatrical DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The restoration of the original Technirama negative brings new life and clarity to this classic film. The colors are super vibrant, and the picture is as crisp as can be. The audio is as clear as a bell. Watching Auntie Mame in 4K is a wonderful cinematic expreince in 4K!
Now, in addition to a simply stunning new restoration. Warner Archive added a few bonus features to this release. Take a look at what was added to this 2-disc set.
* Dave Karger interviews actor Jan Handzlik at the 2026 TCM Classic Film Festival
* Restoration Before and After
* Original Theatrical Trailer
The before-and-after restoration shows how much work went into restoring this film to the amazing quality that we see now. The new interview with Jan Handzik is also a nice bonus. For this epic of a release, it would have been nice to see a bit more bonus features. But I can't complain about how good it looks.
If you love 50s cinema as much as I do, well, I highly recommend this new 4k of Auntie Maine. You can order ya copy of Auntie Mame at MovieZyng or Amazon today.
