The Mastermind (2025) An Ode to the 70s Heist genre comes to Blu-ray!

In the 1970s, moviegoers were treated to many heist films. They saw some great films like Dog Day Afternoon, The Sting, The Hot Rock and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. After many years, these films are still popular. And they have inspired a whole new generation of filmmakers.

One such director is Kelly Eichardt. In 2025 she directed The Mastermind. The film has been streaming on MUBI. But now it is time for physical media fans to get to enjoy this film. Now it has been released on Blu-ray.

Synopsis: In a sedate Massachusetts suburb circa 1970, unemployed family man and amateur art thief J.B Mooney sets out on his first heist. With the museum cased and accomplices recruited, he has an airtight plan. Or so he thinks.

The Mastermind is a love letter to the 70s heist films. The acting and the story is good. Josh O'Connor holds audiences in the palm of his hand with this performance.  But the pacing is a bit slow. Reminiscent of those 70s heist films. I have to be honest audiences in this generation may not appreciate the slow burn. Many want the non stop action. You are not going to get that with this film.

The Mastermind has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. There are several audio tracks to choose from. There are audio options English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0. An English Dolby Digital 2.0 and an English Descriptive Audio. Finally, there are subtitles in English, English SDH, Spanish, Spanish SDH, and French, French SDH.

The Mastermind is crisp and clean. The colors are vibrant and the skin tones are prefect. As for the audio it is as clear as a bell. I am a supporter of physical media, because this Blu-ray provides a quality that can't be found on a streaming service.

Now in addition to this film being presented in HD. MUBI added some bonus features to this Blu-ray release. Take a look at what is included.
