Major Payne Blu-ray Review – Damon Wayans' Classic Military Comedy Revisited

In the 1990s, the sketch comedy show In Living Color introduced the world to many comedians, but especially to the Wayans Family. One of the Wayans who stood out with his hilarious characters was Damon Wayans.

Damon moved from TV into films with such cult classics as Mo' Money and Blankman. Then, in 1995, he would star in the hilarious military comedy Major Payne. This film recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. So, for this epic anniversary, Kino Lorber has released a newly restored Blu-ray of Major Payne.

Synopsis: When peace breaks out in America, killing machine Major Benson Winifred Payne, United States Marine Corps Special Forces (Wayans), is given his marching orders...to the unemployment line. Unable to cope with civilian life, Payne is thrust back into the military regimen as commander of the Madison Academy Junior ROTC. How does the military’s most dangerous secret weapon discipline a few good men when none of them is even old enough to shave? Any way he wants! At least until Dr. Emily Walburn, school counselor (Karyn Parsons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), joins his tour of duty...

I remember seeing Major Payne as a teenager and absolutely loving the film. I have seen it several times over the years. But would I still enjoy all these years later? The answer to that question is a definitive yes! Damon Wayans is unforgettable and Karyn Parsons is the perfect foil to his antics. Also classic wrestling fans look for an action packed cameo by Bam Bam Bigelow. Granted, this film isn't for everyone. But those who love those 90s comedies no doubt will love this film.

Kino Lorber has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are two options for audio tracks. There is an English 5.1 Surround and an English lossless 2.0 Audio. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Kino Lorber's Blu-ray transfer is taken from a 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative! What results is a crisp and clean colorful comedy that looks spectacular in HD. Seeing this film in comparison to the DVD release that is in our library. This is definitely an upgrade. And what makes this even better is that Kino Lorber added some bonus features to this Blu-ray disc. Look at what is included.

Bonus Features:
* NEW Audio Commentary by Director Nick Castle, Moderated by Filmmaker Douglas Hosdale
* There's Not Much You Could Do: NEW Interview with Actor Michael Ironside
* Theatrical Trailer

The new audio commentary brings a lot of cool information and is a really nice listen. To see a brand new interview with Michael Ironside included on this disc. That is pretty awesome. Kino Lorber really went above and beyond to make this something special. And I couldn't be happier.

So if you love 90s comedies as much as I do, Major Payne on Blu-ray needs to be in your home video library. Head over to Kino Lorber or Amazon and order your copy today.
