Voltron Legendary Defender: The Complete series - DVD Review

In the 1980s, cartoons were super amazing. From shows like He-Man and The Masters of the Universe, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Voltron. These shows captured the imagination of kids and we realized anything could be possible.

In 2016, Dreamworks produced a reimagining of Voltron with the series entitled Voltron Legendary Defender and it aired on Netflix for 8 seasons. Now, for the first time, physical media collectors can own this series on DVD.

Synopsis: From days long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe comes the original series, DreamWorks Voltron: Legendary Defender. DreamWorks Animation reimagines one of the most popular fan-favorite shows of all time in this comedic action-packed show. Five unsuspecting teenagers, transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war, become pilots for five robotic lions in the battle to protect the universe from evil. Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite to form the mighty warrior known as Voltron Legendary Defender.

This series is produced with CGI and while it doesn't look like the original series in animation. It is still a tremendously looking anime animation. The arching storyline keeps you invested through this entire series. There is also great voice acting in this series as well. It is a nice companion series, but nothing takes the place of the original.

As with most Netflix series, the seasons are not as long as broadcast television. So Voltron: Legendary Defender's 8 seasons only bring us 78 episodes. But with this short of a series, you can binge the series and then rewatch it all over again.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has transferred these episodes to DVD in widescreen format and is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio, and the audio is English Dolby Digital 5.1. Seasons 1-6 also have the option for Spanish and French language tracks. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. There are also Spanish and French subtitles in Season 1-6.

Even though this is a DVD release, these episodes look and sound incredible. The picture is crisp and clean, and the audio is clear. There are no signs of digital artifacts or audio anomalies. And the best part you own this series instead of paying to stream it whenever you want to see it.

This DVD set is 78 episodes spread across 12 discs. But sadly, there are no bonus features on this set. It is just the complete series. That is still pretty good, but for me, I love bonus interviews, making of featurettes, ect. This set has none of that.

Even with the lack of bonus features, this set will make a nice companion piece to the original Voltron series set in anyone's home video library.

If you enjoyed the Voltron Legendary Defender series on Netflix, well, why not forget about streaming and embrace the physical media and own the series. Head over to MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy of this complete series DVD set of Voltron: Legendary Defender today!
