Blu-ray Review: 1947 All-Star Musical Variety Girl

Many Hollywood musicals spent the money to get huge stars and make these film something spectacular. When you went to the theaters, you felt like you got your money's worth because you saw more stars in one film than if you watched 4 films.  

In 1947, Paramount Pictures brought audiences the film Variety Girl. This film boasts over 40 celebrity appearances in this film. Classic musical and physical media fans can now rejoice as Universal Home Entertainment has released Variety Girl on Blu-ray!

Synopsis: Starlet wannabe Amber LaVonne (Olga San Juan) is mistaken for her friend, the beautiful and talented Catherine Brown (Mary Hatcher). While the zany Amber flubs her way from audition to screen test to stage debut, Catherine cannot seem to keep her head above water in dealing with studio head R.J. O'Connell (Frank Ferguson). Along the way, the madness stops only long enough for musical numbers by Pearl Bailey, Spike Jones and His City Slickers, The Mulcays, and a rare puppetoon version of "Romeow and Juliacat." Topped off by an A-list all-star variety revue, Variety Girl proves itself to be among the most entertaining and hilarious comedies ever filmed.

Variety Girl is no top tier musical. Not by a long shot. But it is a very entertaining film. And you will see Hollywood heavyweights like Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, Alan Ladd, Barbara Stanwyck, Paulette Goddard, Dorothy Lamour, Cecil B. DeMille and George Reeve just to name a few.

Universal Home Entertainment has transferred Variety Girl to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. And finally, there is the option for English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Universal Blu-ray releases seem to be films that have received no restoration whatsoever. Now that doesn't mean that Variety Girl doesn't look good on Blu-ray. It does. It is just with a restoration that you look a whole lot better. And as for bonus features. There is not one bonus feature to be found on this disc. Disappointing!
